Movers in Metro Area

My wife and I are moving from Ames to Ankeny in a month and are wondering if anyone knew of a good affordable moving company and their prices. Also, if any company would move a piano or not.

had decent luck with two/three men and a truck out of urbandale...

Do they move pianos? How much did you pay? We don't have too many big items yet, so it should take one small truck to get everything.

Used 2 Men in a Truck twice - got the same 2 guys (requested them the 2nd time). Worked very well.

We only had them move the big stuff. We collected and moved our own boxes...they just did the large furniture.

I have used 2 Men and a Truck twice. Great the first time, slower than hell the second time.

Yeah, we'd just have them move the piano, tables, chairs, couch, bed ect. The rest I can do myself....we never threw out our boxes from the last move, so at least we have those!

Probably cheaper to hire it done, I have lots of family and friends. The steaks and beer get pretty expensive to a bunch of fat alcholics.

My inlaws used two men and a truck to move my grandmother-in-law. Were happy with them. Couldn't tell you how much - sorry. But I'm pretty sure they went with them because of cost (ie, cheaper)

The first time we moved the piano, we had 5 people with a piano dolley. It was hell and we were sore for a week. We also don't have a way to haul it ourselves. I paid my friends in food and beer that week:) The piano was free so we couldn't say no.

I don't even know if they would move someone from Ames, but DO NOT hire A-1 Movers out of Des Moines. They were supposed to move us from West Des Moines to Johnston, but none of their movers showed up on the move date of July 5th. When I called the company, I talked to the owner who said, "yeah, I'm having a hard time getting people to answer their phones this morning and show up for work." Basically no one will show up because they're all hungover from July 4th festivities. Nice business you've got there. I've heard that this guy basically just pays anyone he can find to do his moves and doesn't really have full-time employees.

Anyway, in the end we ended up with Two Men and a Truck on short notice and I think it was about $600 for a 2BR apt and a garage full of stuff too.

For a move from West Des Moines to Ankey, two men and a truck charged $264 for a large leather couch, two large leather chairs, bed, gas grill, really big solid wood entertainment center (this is for sale if you need one :)), 32" television.... Price was reasonable for the service they provided and I would consider them again. Pretty sure they will give you a rough quote if you call them.

Yes, they can give you a rough estimate when you call. I can't remember how much we paid - I think around $400 or just under. We have a lot of heavy oak furniture.

All you need:

1. means to move stuff

2. dumb friends to lift the heavy crap you don't want to break your back on

3. Payment for said friends

When we moved in October, we used Two Men & A Truck. If you give them a call, they'll ask you aprx numbers on boxes, pianos, tables, etc and then give you a pretty accurate price.

Going from Huxley to West Des Moines - around 45 boxes and a typical 2-person household of furniture cost us a little over $500. Of course that was with us helping them load and unload to speed things up and with us having taken five truck loads of stuff ourselves before hand.

I think the rate was around $95/hr with 100 miles included for free and $1 per mile after that.
