I was bored and youtubing... I keyworded Cyride and I found these videos.
Observations.
1. This footage is not in Ames.
2. Bus footage is kind of creepy.
Why are there Cyrides elsewhere? | | |

We all remember making fun of our little brother. And then that day came when you looked at him and thought "Crap, when did he become taller than me?" There comes a time when you just know your time has passed and it's their spotlight now.

You can buy old CyRide buses when they "retire" them... that's my only guess

On this subject, I have a question. Since these buses just run around town, are they geared specially for that and would it be impractical to buy one to make football road trips?? Or, in other words, are they not built for going 70 mph??

First, the buses get sold all the time when they become too expensive to fix up or out of date with new buses coming in, so it is very plausible for it to be somewhere like Miami. I've seen those youtube videos before as well.
And all the buses are capable of reaching speeds of around 70 miles per hour, some of the buses are a bit of a tank, but we typically take buses down the Des Moines for the State Fair and when we take driving tests we get the buses up to 65 out on Highway 30.
I could tell you which buses would be the best for making the trip though, some of them just aren't very good at getting up to speed.

First off, does anything need to be done to make the buses legal for private use?? Like seat belts and stuff like that??
And secondly, I am amazed at how we get questions answered on this site, whether it's stadium construction or cyride buses or police work and everything in between. It just seems like we have someone on here in every field.

See, what you do is take a hammer and a chisel, and with with a high-powered microscope you aim very carefully at the center of the atom with the chisel, then take a large swing back...

CyRide will often take some of the seats out so they can have replacements for later, and things like the signs will be cleared or taken out. But usually when CyRide sells it it is good to go for private use. I don't think seat belts are required, since school buses don't have them and you're technically not using it for public transit type reasons.
I always thought it would be cool though to get one of the buses with electric signs when they decide to sell them and then program in cool phrases into them.

I see the busses all the time on I35. CyRide runs shuttles to and from the airport before and after breaks, so I know they go 70 mph.

Splitting Atoms? Reminds me of this scene from a Simpson's episode:
[Mr. Burns is reminiscing about his grandfather's old Atom Smashing Plant]
Burns' Grandfather: Come on, men! Smash those atoms! You there, turn out your pockets.
[Two goons seize a waifish worker and turn out his pockets]
Burns' Grandfather: Aha - atoms! One, two, three, four... SIX of them! Take him away!
Waif: You can't treat the working man this way! One of these days we'll form a union, and get the fair and equitable treatment we deserve! Then we'll go too far, and become corrupt and shiftless, and the Japanese will eat us alive!
Burns' Grandfather: The Japanese? Those sandal-wearing goldfish tenders? Ha ha! Bosh! Flimflaw!
Mr. Burns: Oh, if only we'd listened to that young man, instead of walling him up in the abandoned coke oven.

I know that there are insurance issues regarding the status of the bus. I believe it is rather expensive until some modifications are made to give the bus "RV" status.

We have one for tailgating. The biggest problems are insuring them and fixing them when something breaks. Both get VERY expensive.

Maybe yours is the one I saw. It was in a driveway of a house that sits on the corner of Wilder and some other street in West Ames.
