Joe Paterno's Salary

JoePa's salary was just released because of a court order:
ESPN - Paterno's annual salary released after court battle - College Football

The guy only gets $512,664.. I say only... that is a lot to me... but it's also a lot less than some others get.

That number surprised me, too. I figured he would be somewhere in that 1.5 million range. I guess when you have been coaching at the same place for 80 years the money isn't that important after awhile.

Now some other coaches should get a clue!

This is where I think Iowa went crazy paying Ferentz what they do. A couple of the few jobs that would actually lure him away won't pay him that much, so what was the incentive in overpaying?

That is just the base. He probably gets a bunch more for TV/radio shows, camps, etc.

I suppose if the goal was to keep Ferentz then they succeeded.

I would bet that Penn State has tired to increase it many times.

I am guessing with TV, camps, and mostly shoe deal it is well over $1million/year...

Money is trivial to an 80 year old in my opinion. He coaches for his own health, his hobby and to keep his mind sharp.

I haven't exactly seen JoPa run for quite a while now.

Well, there was that game when he ran down an official...

That's what puzzles are for... wait, trying to win with Penn is sorta like a puzzle...

Re: Joe Paterno's Salary

I wonder if that is just what the state pays him and if he gets outside income for shows, endorsements, etc. like most coaches do. The school pays the base salary and gets the rest from boosters and other outside sources. Not sure how the Rag's database works ( DesMoinesRegister.com | Des Moines watchdog | The Des Moines Register) because Chizik shows up as $586,363 and he makes somewhere over $1 mil a year total yet Ferentz shows up as $2.765 mil.

Just goes to show that JoPa is still one of the true class acts and money is not why he's coaching.

Re: Joe Paterno's Salary

The article clearly states:

"Many coaches receive substantial bonuses or outside income, but the retirement system data did not show other forms of compensation.

Paterno acknowledged Wednesday he makes more money than is reflected in the retirement system's figures. But he didn't specify how much."

As others have said, the total compensation package of nearly every coach today comes from a combination of sources...endorsement deals, media deals, athletic foundations, etc. The "salary" paid by the school is an ever smaller percentage of a typical coaches' total compensation in today's world.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
