Lottery winner might not get to keep his winnings.

Lottery ticket unlucky for winner - Criminal weirdness - MSNBC.com

I dont know what to think. It says that the money may go back to the department of revenue. I think in this case the money should be donated to charities. The guy bought the ticket and has to forfeit it because he violated probation. So the Dept of Rev gets it?

He should have made some deal with somebody to turn it in for him.

I heard about this on the radio this morning... why would he not just give it to a wife, son, daughter, or anyone that could report it without him violating his parol?? I'm guessing that he just forgot about parol in the excitement... hopefully for him the NCAA isn't the ruling body on his appeal...

He should be allowed to keep the money, but he should go to jail or increase his probation for breaking it. He won it fair and square. Would you ask for your money back if you were playing a poker game at your house because he broke his probation?

That's an interesting point. It is still his money isn't it? He didn't steal it.

Yeah, thats where it is hazy. Its like they say he's disqualified, but the state lottery probably doesnt have a rule for that. So its the legal system trying to control it. I would say its his money, but if they rule otherwise I think it should go to a charity.

Re: Lottery winner might not get to keep his winnings.

There have been a number of occasions where minors have won jackpots playing slot machines in Las Vegas. The issue is clear in those cases that the minors were illegally playing the slot machines due to their age. Therefore the casino withholds awarding the payoff to the minor. In addition, the Nevada gaming commision investigates and sometimes ends up fining the casino for not properly supervising the slots.

So why minors even bother playing the slots is beyond me since they have no reasonable expectation of being paid even if the machine awards them a prize (overhead cameras report who plays the machines so a legal player would not be successful in lying and claiming that they were playing the machine)

He served his time... give the guy the money and let him go. Ya gotta figure that he's not going to be robbing any banks in the future, right??
