Operative word being "could".....he runs a 4.4 and will get bigger and faster in the future. He may be running a 4.3 before he leaves ISU...

Bate is a freshman and has not played the positoin full-time ever. By the time he is a Sr he can be....he has the physical tools. So, on potential alone....I will use him in the same sentence. And Istand by my statement....I am not baseing this on Bate's season and Calvin Johnson's last season at GT. But on Bate's physical tools and potential....

Exactly, i really hoped that we would see much more of this then we did....i mean getting a player like bates the ball with run pass options, especially from the wr position really compounds how a defense reacts to so many different situations. Common, high school kids eat up that creative offense stuff...they picture themselves making those plays on the sandlot....thats what its about in recruiting....Look at Missouri and Kansas right now, because of their great seasons and dynamic offenses, theyre recruiting is off the hook....don't be shocked to see either or both with a top 20 recruiting class....

Boise St, Hawaii, Texas Tech all run some form of the spread and all have superior talent at Wideout....i would love to see our 4 spread with Hamilton, Graham, Bates and Franklin with sumral odd guy out.....with Franklin - i love 33's comments, i watched that toledo game in person and there were several plays that he was wide open and then other plays he was dominated at the line of scrimmage - needs size to go with his speed....didnt matter because meyer was staring down his primary receiver, as was the entire defense...i would have loved to have been a fly on the wall during the film sessions at Texas when they were evaluating Meyer...."Okay watch his helmet, don't worry about him looking off, just wherever he's looking, sprint in that direction!".....

I think a darkhorse in this whole qb situation is going to be Tiller and Jordan....i think jordan has the ht and arm strength to play well, a coaches son, and his accuracy was good but in the end, he redshirts next year for sure to understand offense and bulk up a bit. But Tiller is a big version of seneca and that has to excite any Clone fan....

I don't care, get the ball in your playmakers hands - sumral is not a playmaker - he's your possession receiver and thats important too...But, Graham and Hamilton are playmakers and throw into that mix AA able to deliver the deep ball and Bates doing various things....wow we have the talent, if, we can utilze it correctly!!!!

Fake catching is what our other punt returners were doing.

I thought Bates was 6-2 210 or more. That is not small for a safety.

NOW HERE IS A BOLD STATEMENT: Bates could out punt return Blythe in my humble opinion.

Bates is bigger than Chase Daniel and Todd Reisen and the new Nebraska qb. He is young and will add weight.

Re: ISUCLONES33 need insight....

Bates is a QB with Seneca's speed and quickness, better arm and bigger. I'm not saying he's better at the position, but certainly has the physical assets. Arnaud had a gun for an arm, but not the evasive ability or the ability to run that Bates has. It will be interesting to watch.

Re: ISUCLONES33 need insight....

No offense to anyone, but what exactly did Bates do this year? He caught one pass really. It was a huge pass but he didn't do much after that. He had a bunch of designed plays that all went for losses. Its understandable because they only brought him in at Qb when he was going to run it. I think he has all the tools to be a great playmakers and could be a good WR but he hasn't done anything yet to get the praise he is receiving. He may not even be that great next year at WR if he is trading time between Qb and WR to start. I think he is a great talent and will be in the future but I didn't see much on the field to compare him to NFL talent.

Re: ISUCLONES33 need insight....

If he plays anything other than QB on offense, I hope they don't give him the ball every time he is on the field. I hope he gets on the field as WR if he isn't the QB, and let him play WR a decent amount of the time. Then, when you want to play some trickery with him, the defense won't be keying in on him like they did every single time he tried to run a play this year.

Chizik: "One thing that I’d encourage our fans…I want them to be the loudest stadium in the Big 12. I don’t care…I want Jack Trice stadium to be the loudest in the Big 12 and I think that creates homefield advantage.... I want to stress to everyone…I want this place to be juiced up. They bought 36,000 season tickets so there is a passion there…don’t hide it…let it out. I want there to be a passion in the stadium."

Re: ISUCLONES33 need insight....

A couple of pass plays when he caught the ball, it was INSTANT acceleration. No one on the team has that. I agree it would have been nice to see him redshirt, but without him, no Iowa win. It was worth the redshirt just for that win.

Re: ISUCLONES33 need insight....

Bates could be a Jeremy Maclin type player. Receiver brought around for reverses and option passes. Definite playmaker. I thought AA looked pretty good. Threw some nice passes. Hopefully Bates and others will compete. Nice problem to have. And you need two quarterbacks in this league. It wouldn't hurt to throw the opposition off. I remember the Wayne Stanley, Buddy Hardeman days. Very pleasant memories. Awesome offense.

Man I saw Bates up close at the walkthrough practice before the Colorado game and the kid blew my mind. The guy is ripped and has some serious muscle!!!! He absolutely has the pysical stature to play safety.

Re: ISUCLONES33 need insight....

Anybody else drooling at the idea that Bates could be a Randle-El (pro) type player?

If he's as good a QB as some say, and Arnaud holds onto the spot. Think of the options that a fast, mobile, versatile receiver like Bates would provide.

In response to "what did he do this year" - I think a good portion of his futility was due to poor play calling. They never did anything with him EXCEPT run. Did he throw a single ball this year. Everything was designed QB run. Pretty easy to defend when the D expects nothing else. As far as receiving - I thought he did pretty good, when you consider he's only out there sporadically and probably the 4th or 5th receiver as a true frosh.

Agree saw Wallace up close for the first time at the same walkthrough and couldn't believe how skinny the kid was.

On a side note I would like to see Bates come in and run some stuff like McFadden at Arkansas does.

This was the biggest problem trying to use Bates this year. He wasn't on the field enough, and when he was the defense keyed on him because they knew he was going to get the ball.
