Re: Campus in the winter
I loved the campus in winter. Before anyone really trampled the snow. When the big flakes would come down and all is quiet. Just a great place to be in spring and in winter.

Re: Campus in the winter
After living in the Chicago suburbs for 10 years, then going to ISU for 5 years - and now living back in Texas for almost 4 years - I can honestly say I don't miss it. Everything you guys talk about is great - the big snow flakes, the look of central campus, etc - but it only lasts for however long it takes for the cars to dirty the snow, people to trample it, for it to become hard and dry as the wind blows over the snow - I love the idea of the midwest winter, and I love the reality of living in the Texas winter. ;) (And before you ask - if you were going to - yes, I love the Texas summers, I honestly do - you think central campus is great on that first 60 degree day in spring in Ames - move to the south where the "scenery" is that great 10 mths out of the year!) -
Re: Campus in the winter
At Towers after the first snow they'd build a large, well uhhh... part of the male anatomy in the courtyard and sometimes parts of the female's as well before it would eventually get torn down. Or the random couch burning in RCA. The one thing I did not like though was the crow poo on the sidewalks in some places and once the snow melted or it rained on it was even more nasty.

I remember that - forgot about it until you mentioned it. Yeah - always a good time, but the crows were ridiculous.

Re: Campus in the winter
It's tough to think about winter when it's going to get up to 60 here today.
Anyway, some of my favorite winter memories involved traveling from Larch to Hilton when you'd have to hurdle giant snow drifts along Lincolnway and then try to stay in somebody's foot prints through about 2 feet of snow. That part wasn't that great but once you were finally up the stairs and felt that first blast of warm air, smelled that first whiff of popcorn, and heard the first sounds of the band...

Loved that frozen over Friley Hall Laverne Lake when they had to rescue/remove the frozen swans in the Great Blizzard of 76. That was a rescue operation that could have been on TV.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

As for me, I love it when it snows at night. The big fluffy flakes falling, snow on everything.
Or today, riding across campus the carillioner (sp?) was playing Christmas carols on the campinelle. And for those who have been away a while, in the winter they light the clock faces with red and yellow lights now (yellow on the North and South faces, red on the East and West)
Good stuff Are you kidding. It is dark and depressing not to mention freeing. Ames is no place to be between November and June.

My personal favorite....
The groundskeepers using one of these bad boys to polish the ice in the mornings. Some people wear Superman pajamas. Superman wears Chuck Norris pajamas. -

The flowers and blooming trees are freak'n beautiful at the end of April, and the only depressing part is everyone leaving for the summer.
And I forget who all mentioned it but of course sledding on dining hall trays, the hill by the ice rink, and the snow uh, scultpures are all parts of ISU winter that I'm going to miss when I'm gone.
Uh yeah Mrs. Geoffery, I'm gonna return this tray... Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State, and may her colors ever fly!!! In Accordance with Prophecy -
Re: Campus in the winter
The best ISU winter memory was a nasty storm during the winter of 90-91 that closed down campus so my roommate and I walked the 1 block to Welch Ave and drank beer and played pool for 12 hours and were still home by 10 pm.

There's a few pics I took from the winter storms earlier this year - the ice storm was the best!

Re: Campus in the winter
I remember not getting all the snow off my shoes and having puddles around me feet during class, watching people fall was always fun too. Oh and I guess it can be fun to watch snow fall as well. And can't forget the time classes were cancelled for the big storm that never happened.

Re: Campus in the winter
The people who rip on the weather in Ames and at ISU make me wonder why in the world they would ever choose to go to a school that had temperatures below 60 degrees. I mean you knew about that going in, right? Or does it just make you feel good to "look down your nose" at all of us who enjoy some aspects of the winter weather? I never quite understood that. I mean I'm glad that they're a fellow alumnus but geez...

I agree. That goes on anywhere you go around here. I have people griping at me all winter season long about how cold it is and it sucks. Then move somewhere else. The only time of year I dont like is when the snow is melting and you get that wet dirty brown look everywhere.

You can't tell me stuff like this doesn't make Ames fun in the winter
