I think the Hawk fanbase would love Chuck Long. But you've got to think there would be a re-building process -- especially with the regression of the program over the last couple of years.

The fans would love Long but I don't konw that he has much of a resume does he? I haven't followed his career to know what he's been up to.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Hiring Long could be the best/worst thing they ever did. How could ya fire the guy? And the guy that did fire him (if it came to that) would be toast eventually. IMO, it's a big reason Alford is not in Indiana.

Take a look at Nebraska. They've gone back to some illustrious past with their staff. If they can't get it turned around over there - talk about major epic meltdown to the likes we have never seen.

I just don't think you can put a guy like Long in the HC spot with that kind of risk and very little resume to go on.

And the fact that he hasn't proven to be a good head coach yet. He was 3-9 in 2006 and 4-8 in 2007. I think it would be pretty tough to explain hiring a Mountain West coach with that kind of record.

Re: RUMOR - Ferentz Meets w/ Michigan In NYC

Has this quote from Kirk Herbstreit been posted?

On Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz: "Kirk Ferentz, to me, is one of the best coaches in America. You imagine how good he would he be if he wore a block 'M' into a family room compared to a Hawkeye. All due respect to Iowa, but they are always are going to be kind of that second-tier team in the Big Ten, and if Kirk Ferentz has the resources with the new stadium and everything - and they're going to - he can walk into family rooms anywhere in the country with Michigan on his sweater and he's going to be able to bring in a lot of players. There's no doubt about that. That's if in fact he ends up becoming a real player."

It would have been similar to those that wanted Hoiberg in as the head coach this past time around for us. He's a legend that people love but that doesn't mean he's qualified yet for that type of job. Just because somebody can play the sport doesn't mean they can coach it and lead a successful program.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

I hope Ferentz goes to Michigan just for a few weeks of amusement with the Iowa fans talking replacement possibilities.

It was great when hiring the BB coach:
"We'll get Bruce Pearl"
"Majerus is coming"
"Rick Patino? Yeah, he's a possibility"
.....
"We hired who? Linkenliter? Lickensticker? The Butler HC?"

It was priceless.

Long hasn't exactly been impressive at San Diego St. Then again, he's only been there since 2006. He was 3-9 in '06 and 5-7 this year. If they hire him they're hiring him in name only as he's proved nothing so far as a head coach (other than it appears SDSU's going in the right direction).

He does have a pretty good track record as an assistant, though. Obviously there's a big difference between being an assistant and a head coach, but he was looked at when they hired Ferentz, but was passed over, went to Oklahoma and won a national championship as an assistant.

If he was relatively close at that point, you would think his resume would put him into contention at this point.

I think it's easier to sell the hire of an up and coming assistant rather than a once great assistant who's trying to rebuild another program as a HC, but hasn't proved he's capable yet.

You can't say "ignore his performance to date as a HC and look how great of Offensive Coordinator he was... he'll be a great HC for our school."

Oh I don't disagree at all. If he was some random guy they were pulling off the street it would be a way bigger issue, but because it's Chuck Long, he'll get a big time free pass from a lot of Hawk fans, who are just looking for any reason to idolize the guy.

Herbstreit on the Michigan Situation - Comment about Iowa

I put this in a long thread about Ferentz and Iowa...but this was too good to pass up! It definitely brought a smile to my face! From an interview with Kirk Herbstreit about the Michigan situation and his role in breaking a story that didn't happen:

Edit: Sorry for the look of repeating the post...the mods didn't like me putting it up in a seperate thread...I just thought people would enjoy the shot at Iowa by Kirk Herbstreit...my bad...

You know that one has to sting the Hawkeye faithful. The delusion of greatness runs pretty deep over there, and to have one of the more recognizable faces of college football lob a grenade like that? ...And Herbie's a Big 10 supporter, too. It's like he kicked the dog of every member of the Hawkeye Nation. I'll bet he really hears it from the fans the next time that Gameday is at Kinnick........... (hard to keep a straight face when typing that)

Hey come on, you know that Gameday would be at Kinnick every week if ESPN had it's way. They just move it around to be fair to other schools. Plus, if it was at Kinnick every week, it would be the highest rated show that has ever been on television, and Iowa City just doesn't want to sell out like that. Kinnick is, after all, the greatest football stadium ever built, and is rivaled only by the Pyramids of Egypt and the Sistine Chapel for sheer architectural brilliance. If God played football, he'd play at Kinnick, which he did, when he came to earth in the form of Drew Tate. Also, all of the Hawkeye cheerleaders are hot and Charlie Daniels is the best musician in the world. Oh, yeah, and if Kirk does leave for Michigan, Bob Stoops cannot wait to don the Black and Gold again.

"Please bury me with all my stuff, because you know it's mine..."

You're seeing even more delusion via threads about "KF is so loyal if he turns down the Michigan job".

First, we'll never know if he turns it down, if in fact he did turn it down or they told him to go away after an interview.

And...why does him turning it down make him loyal? What if they low-balled him on salary? Or told him he had to hire certain assistants if he accepted?

If he turns it down because of that, is he still a loyal Iowa guy?
