Anyone on here ride dirt bikes?

If so, what size would be good for a 13-yr old? And any preferences on make?

I'm going from having quads all my life to possibly getting a dirt bike. I've mostly had Japanese quads (besides a Bombardier) but I've heard a lot of good things about KTM. It looks like these things loose a lot of value so I may need to pick up a used one.

I had a older Kawasaki KDX 80 from age 12-14, then went with a Yamaha XT 350 from 14-16, then a Kawasaki KLR 650 from 16-20. For a 13 year old with no experience, i'd recommend like a KX 80, YZ 80, or an XR80 for strict dirt bikes. If you want more of an enduro, i'd go with a KE 100 (dual purpose) i'm not sure if they still make them, but they were ugly devils. If he has some experience and wants a dual purpose bike, i still have my old 85 XT 350. they are outstanding bikes, and i would recommend them to anyone.

If i were to get a "dirt bike" today, i would go with want to go with a four stroke, something like a WR 426 (Yamaha).

I ride a Honda CRF250X. It all depends on the skill level, and the size of your kid. A good beginners bike is a Kawasaki KLX 110, but at 13 your son/daughter may be getting too big. You may want to look into a Honda CRF150R (They offer too versions one is an all new version with a unicam engine, and the other is a tame version)

You may want to teach your child how to use a clutch on a 4 wheeler first, then move them on to a thumper.

The KLX 110 is an automatic, so it's good for beginners.

Unless you think they are going to become a hard core racer, I would highly suggest going with a 4 stroke dirt bike. Honda XR80,100,200,250 depending on how old of a bike you are looking at. With a 4 stroke you can putz around on it where a 2 stroke motor is typically either wide azz open or nothing. Plus on a 2 stroke if you get a smaller motor 60,80 you have to feather the clutch alot because they have not torque when taking off until you get some rpm's. Then if you get a 125,250 or bigger two stroke and that motor gets hits the power band, it can be a dangerous weapon for somebody just learning the ropes. 2 strokes, especially the watercooled ones, are very prone to getting hot if you aren't running it wide open, the 4 strokes you can ride it all day idling and a lot funner to in my opinion.

Long story short. Get a 2 stroke if you want to race, get a 4 stroke for anything else...

the 2 stroke 80cc Bikes (YZ KX CR) are pretty snappy for an inexperienced young rider. I too would recommend starting them off on a 4 stroke Honda that is a trail bike and not the race version.
