When I was at UNI, McDermott had over 250 offensive plays. 50 inbounds plays under the hoop and about 50 inbounds plays from the sideline.
I can't imagine how many he has now. It's going to take the players a long time to understand it and feel comfortable on the court. I really believe that's why every game looks like the first day of practice.
He didn't exactly "get it going" and UNI his first two years but his teams did get significantly better.

This was Bill Callahan's problem - the offense and defense were too complicated and it took his kids 2-3 years to figure out the plays. He then would only run a certain percentage of these plays.

I heard that playing "help out defense" was in these days though. We could start with that. maybe take a charge.

How many plays did we run tonight?

Not enough to score 50 again.

Our defenders get burned by players driving to the basket every time. Until he can get an offense going, maybe McD would be better off mixing in a little zone. eh, what do I know?

Our problems are many, but why not have some sort of flex or motion offense to fall back on if one of our plays isn't there? Name another team in the country that runs set plays all the time with no offense - I don't think there is one.
Put Garret and Boozer in full time and let them learn on the fly. Brian Peterson, might be a nice guy, is the worst player to ever log significant minutes for the Clones. I cannot believe McD doesn't see this. If Drake blows us out, what is KU going to do? Peterson has trouble getting the ball across mid court against two slow IA High School players for Drake - Mario Chalmers is going to depants him every time down the floor. We might score 0.
I am starting to think McD is in over his head.

We look confused because we basically have 2 walk-ons starting at both guard spots.
If I had 1 question to ask GMac it would be why do BP and SH continue to play over Boozer and Garrett?? We recruited CB and DG to play at this level...let them get some experience. BP and SH are obviously NOT the answer, why not give the recruited guys more time?

Take a look at Iowa. They've looked horrid. I mean...horrid. Worse than we had until last night.
And then, they get their best player back. A guard with a good handle on the ball and a pretty good scorer.
Wham...they look solid last night and beat a pretty decent UNI team.
Guards matter...especially the experienced kind.
We got any of those lying around?

The problem is that at this stage neither of those players gives the team a better chance to win. If they were better they would be starting, that I feel confident about.

Seat and Brian have some college experience, albeit at a lower level, it's still experience. I knew these two would be used early as a stop-gap. I felt Sean could give us more but hasn't shown anything yet.
I'd venture to guess there's a good reason Boozer has seen very limited action. He did come in and make a 3-point shot right away.
But then again...so did John Neal a while back...

At least next year we should have a healthy WJ and hopefully LS will stick around. Add to that DB and WE and at least we will have a few more options. DG will get better, but I think his future will be as a two guard versus a point guard.

If Peterson and Haluska give us a better chance to win than Garrett and Boozer, does that mean we whiffed big time on recruiting those 2? I mean, BP and SH couldn't take my 77-year old grandmother off the dribble and combine to score 4 points against Drake, and that's better than DG and CB could be providing at this point in time? Wow, that's really sad.
