Well it looks like we should look forward to next year and begin to be skeptical if next season is not so great

In my opinion I would look at it as there's a serious flaw in his coaching ~ preparation ~ recruiting system in the 2nd year. Either way, he's consistent; which I suppose could support the 3+ season success. I don't think we see success till year 4.

Realistically, we may have to wait till year 4 - at the earliest. Next year we start over with possible (2) new guards a new center and, if W Johnson redshirts, he'll be 1.5 years removed by B12 competition. I also think we'll miss Clark's minutes - a lot!

    Re: Greg McDermott's coaching career

I agree with most of what Jeremy wrote, we're going to have to be patient. When you fire a coach like Morgan that's popular with his players, you risk losing some of those players and recruits (I think about 5 of them are now starting at good programs around the country). A program will often drop to a very low level before it can start back up, and that's where Greg is now. I know it's hard to watch and we're having some embarassing losses, but I expect us to be much better next year. If we're not, then it may be time to start worrying.

True, but these players are also playing for a different coach. Morgan has some talent while he was here and they never really developed to their potential.

We won't start over with 2 new guards. We may have 2 new guards that start, but it won't be starting over. They will have veteran guards to help them along. This year and last year, the only people the guards could learn from were the coaches. Next year, even if Haluska and Petersen are relegated to bench duty, the new guards will have teammates to go to if they don't understand the coach. Our veteran guards will be able to help them along. Maybe the veteran guards will be able to explain things in way differently than the coaches do making it easier for the new guys to learn.

BigBake- I don't want to get in an argument on Morgan, but I think he should get a little credit for 4 post season wins, 4 wins over top 10 teams at home and on the road, and never having a losing season, winning the Big 4 title in his worst season. He did this in 3 years following the mess with Larry's firing when the program was on the brink of disaster. I do think players like Homan, Vroman, Staple, Stinson, and others reached their potential under Morgan.

Good point saf. The game last night was eerily similiar to the one a couple years ago at UNI when they couldn't miss a shot and we couldn't do anything right. I for one was not that discouraged by our defense last night. Drake was hitting everything they threw at the basket, most of the time with someone having a hand up. Turnovers on the other hand were horrible...

Let me get this straight; our guard court will be better next year because the new guards will have the benefit of learning tips from Haluska and Petersen? I really hope you're right, but I can't find the faith.

    Re: Greg McDermott's coaching career

I'm pretty disappointed in Mac's half time adjustments, or adjustments in general. He didn't do anything defensively to try and slow down Drake last night and I've seen similar play in the past few games. I just think we need to do some different things defensively. Drake pressures the ball the length of the court which causes an offense to rush when they get into their sets, we don't do anything like that. I can't see our offense getting any better this year with our problems at the point. BP can't distribute and he can't penetrate a defense, two things a point has to be able to do, and if you can't do those two things you have to be able to create your own shot, and Diante just isn't ready, he plays like a deer in the headlights out there and is just too undersized at this point. Brackins has to be frustrated, all that talent and nobody to get him the ball, there are so many times he has position on his man and the ball gets reversed.
