I didn't catch the whole interview so maybe someone can post the other details but most notably he was questioning McDermott use of his recruited players namely Garrett and Brakins.
He said McDermott is using them in a system where they would not shine. That their athletic talents aren't fully being used by running a super-controlled offense. Interesting to say the least.
His analogy was having a prize race horse and using it at the state fair for pony rides.
He also talked about Stinson and what a great player he was and how much basketball IQ he had. Said that Stinson and Blalock could really have benefited from staying for their senior years at Iowa State.
Very interesting interview.

Is or isn't using them in a system where they would shine?
Your post is kinda confusing to me because later you talk about using a prize race horse for pony rides.

Very interesting interview. What Jake also said was that the players dont want to play mcdermotts style of play and want a more up tempo style of play hence the analogy of race horses and ponies.
Jake also said that mcdermott needs to recruit uni style players to succeed at iowa state.
Jake was being brutally honest boys. He also said that isu is dead last in the big 12 in scoring...and the big 12 is a lot tougher than it has been in the past.

Garrett and Brackins were recruited by GMac, so I'm a bit miffed at the comment that "they don't want to play his style".
Who's "style" do you reckon they thought they were going to play??????

I have to say I agree with Jake's assessment. I'd especially like to see Diante Garrett play more minutes. I know he'll make his fair share of turnovers as a fresman, but he's a special talent and can create a lot of offense. The only way he'll learn from his mistakes is by making mistakes.
It was interesting watching the video of the 1987 ISU/Iowa game. Johnny Orr had a knack for putting his players in a position to succeed. He recruited his type of players, but he didn't try to force his players into his system. The team's offense was much different with Big Victor down low than it was with Barry Stevens as the focal point. I'd like to see McDermott realize we don't have great half-court team right now. No three-point threats or consistent down-low threats. Let's use our athletism with Brackins, Garrett, WJ (when healthy), and Clark.

I wonder who's going to pile onto the current situation next?

Sorry guys. I edited the post.
Jake said that the star athletes recruited by Mac AREN'T being used properly because of McDermott's use of his UNI offense.

The thing we do know is that the jury will be out on Coach Mac until he gets us to the NCAA tourny. I just hope that is sooner than later. Since 2000 we have only been to the NCAA tournament 3 years out of 7 ... soon to be 3-8.

Im not sure about the stintson comment. I dont know how much basketball IQ he has, he spent most of his junior season yelling at other teamates, missing shots, not playing defense, and driving in and missing layups. I definetely think the transition between morgan and mcdermott would have been easier if stintson and blaylock would have stayed. Obviously both of them bolting early was bad for both as neither have done anything worth leaving for

I haven't heard about Stinson's Basketball IQ for a while. That used to be the topic of EVERY pre and post game interview a couple years ago.

Uptempo with our guards is just a bad idea. They are struggling in the current tempo. My question for Jake is has he really thought this through?
