DeMarlo Slocum is the former Las Vegas prospects coach and is now at Idaho. That is what the hold up is with Mcfarland and Stinnet. This makes more sense to me now.

Even so, if the players are decent, would they rather play at Iowa State or Idaho? Scenery may be great in Boise, but basketball recognition would be much smaller.

Hell, I've been to Idaho for work - it was kind of pretty, but I'd much rather look out upon our green fields. I wouldn't even give them the edge there.

I am with you on that Bryce man but if they like the coach then that is some pretty hard stuff to overcome.

Okay, so how many players have gone to the NBA from Idaho? That may take two seconds to answer. And if they want to really stand out in a crowd, then you go to Moscow. Guess these guys may like Coach Dad more than their future.

Slocum comes to the Vandals from USC where he spent one season as Director of Basketball Operations where his duties included recruiting, team travel, scouting and camp coordination. Prior to USC, Slocum spent one season as an assistant coach at Dixie State College at St. George, Utah. The Rebels entered the 2004-05 season as the number one ranked NJCAA team. Before Dixie State, Slocum was an assistant at Georgia Southern for one season. “Few would argue that one of the rising stars in coaching at the University of Idaho was Coach (Tim) Floyd and one of the first things he did at USC was to hire DeMarlo,” Pfeifer said. “I think that speaks volumes.” Slocum played two seasons for Dixie State College before transferring to Georgia Southern for his final two years of eligibility. In his final season at Dixie State the team finished the year ranked sixth among national junior colleges. In his first season playing for Georgia Southern, he finished second on the team in scoring and was fourth on the team his senior season. “He has great connections in recruiting and his pertinent coaching experiences are what we need,” Pfeifer said. Slocum also spent four years as the head coach of the Las Vegas Prospects AAU team and has experience working at various collegiate basketball development camps. Slocum graduated from Georgia Southern in 2001 with a degree in public recreation/kinesiology. He is originally from Las Vegas, Nev. | EIU is the other Okoboji University for serious students and home of Captain Kirk who pilots the Enterprise on its Trek through the Universe for finding his next great job. Taulbee, a 6-10, 255-pound center, comes to Idaho as a junior from the City College of San Francisco. He averaged 8.0 points and 7.0 rebounds during his sophomore season at CCSF and helped his team to a 30-4 overall record and a State Final Four appearance. “We are looking for Sebastien to really come in and impact our program,” Idaho coach George Pfeifer said. “We were obviously in need of someone of not only his height and athleticism, but also his thickness. He loves the weight room and he has got a tremendous jumping ability. He has good hands and he is very strong and aggressive. “He has had a career that has been plagued by injury, but – knock on wood – if he can get through the season without those injuries popping up we are expecting big things from him. A lot of recruiting publications had him ranked as one of the top junior college players coming out of California, he’s just had some bad luck health-wise.” Jackson is a 6-8, 200-pound forward from Rincon High School at Tucson, Ariz., where he averaged 17.9 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists. He also tallied 108 blocks (3.9 per game) which was the most in the state of Arizona during the prep season. Additionally, he shot 57 percent from the floor and 82 percent from the free throw line.
He was named first team all-state and was the Tucson Citizen Southern Arizona Player of the Year. His team reached the 4A Arizona state championship game where he scored 11 points and added 18 rebounds. Jackson also was named to the All-Arizona Informant Super 10.
During his senior season, Jackson tallied 13 20-plus scoring games and 15 double-digit rebound contests, while also garnering 14 double-doubles as his team compiled a 23-8 mark. “We are really excited about David,” Pfeifer said. “He is long and athletic and he can run and jump. He brings a lot to the table with his inside-outside ability. His upside is very big and his body is built where he can put on more weight. Some other programs tried to get him committed and signed so we feel very blessed we were able to get him here.” | EIU is the other Okoboji University for serious students and home of Captain Kirk who pilots the Enterprise on its Trek through the Universe for finding his next great job. The Vandals will open their season at home for the first time since the 2002-03 season with a game vs. North Dakota State Nov. 10. “The best aspect of our schedule is we have home games early in our campaign. Those home games are important for our players and they are important for our fans,” Idaho coach George Pfeifer. Overall, Idaho will play 14 games at home, including hosting a Bracket Buster game Feb. 17, and 16 on the road. The Vandals will play two of its first three games at home before heading out on a three-game road trip which includes contests at Gonzaga (Nov. 26) and Washington (Nov. 29). The Vandals will also host Southern Utah (Dec. 2), Washington State (Dec. 9) and South Dakota State (Dec. 30) in preseason action. “We have some space between our games, which is important with amount of new coaches and players,” Pfeifer said. “It is important to be able to play a basketball game and then have a moment to go back to the drawing board with practice or counseling or whatever is pertinent.” Idaho’s second season in the Western Athletic Conference begins with games on the road at Fresno State (Jan. 4) and Nevada (Jan. 6). The opening weekend is one of just two with back-to-back road games during WAC play. Idaho’s first WAC home game is Jan. 18 vs. Hawai`i. “We were able to do some things with the WAC schedule to allow for some time in between games and we are hosting a Bracket Buster game versus having to go out on the road. We have a good balance of between home and away games,” Pfeifer said. | EIU is the other Okoboji University for serious students and home of Captain Kirk who pilots the Enterprise on its Trek through the Universe for finding his next great job.
