Re: ISU vs Iowa Wrestling Thread

They should put the wrestlers in a big metal cage. Then, they should blare heavy metal music, and flash strobe lights, and have a crazy announcer yelling all sorts of things that nobody can actually understand. And then, instead of the current singlets that the wrestlers wear, they should wear speed-os. And instead of take downs, near falls, etc..., they should just fight until the finish!
Classic!!

Granted everyone coaches different. When I coached wrestling the first thing I tought my kids was be aggressive. It drives me crazy to see guys standing around, with neck ties, not trying to make something happen when they are on their feet. I also hate when a guy is on the bottom and his first move out off the whistle is plant all 4 points hard to the mat. In a dual meet the best wrestlers on the team have to get bonus points. Zanriski only attempted 2 or 3 take downs the whole match, a takedown would have won him the match in the end and he didnt even attempt one. There were times when the ISU wrestler was really putting pressure on the Iowa wrestler and controling the match but then it looked like they eased up.

Good dual teams get bonus points. Its early in the season wins now are nice but in wrestling the wins at the end of the season are the ones that really count.
Thanks for the resume, but back to the point. You are saying you want ZABRISKIE to take more shots on Fields and let a much bigger Fields lay on him. I would rather him try for position to attemp for an ankle pick or a shrug more so than shoot straight into him. Yes, bonus points are nice but in college are tough to get. I do not know why you think Zabriskie is the one who needed to get the bonus point while talking about our best wrestler, maybe Varner? He wrestled well, but I would worry more about him only getting us 3 than Zabriskie. It is not also always a bad thing to not be aggressive, everyone has their own style and against someone like Fields I am fine with Zabriskie not being too aggressive.

I agree except for the agressive part. Yes Varner did need to get bonus points. Zabriskie should be use to wrestling guys bigger than him, he just needs to pick his spots to get a shot, that will come. Once again this meet doesnt matter much in the relm of things. They know where they are now, they know they can get beat, they will get better as the season goes on, the staff will have them ready for the NCAAs when they come around. I will trade this loss for a NCAA team title anyday.

I would guess about a 65-35 split. I was in the lower section (which was about 96% red) and I still heard alot of Hawk fans up top.

The balcony had a lot of Hawkeye fans, I'd say around 30% up there were wearing black and gold. It was a pretty good ISU showing for wrestling. Considering we usually average around 2-3K.

SouthernHawk, I was just suggesting that maybe the sport should focus on building a broader fanbase - I'd rather watch hockey right now simply because I know how the game is played, I know the rules, and I just understand the game better and so can be more excited about it. I also grew up in Florida which really is not a hockey state. I would like to know more about wrestling but do not want to spend a lot of time having to read about it. I found out about hockey by watching the game. There really is no way to learn about wrestling besides either reading about it or getting to know the right people. I'm not suggesting that you change wrestling in any major way, just market it better. Then again, I'm just a nobody since I did not grow up in Iowa watching wrestling.

So, you learned to respect hockey from watching it, but won't give the same time/effort to wrestling. Yea, you really want to learn about it.

Re: ISU vs Iowa Wrestling Thread

I'm confused with how you assume I am disrespecting wrestling, I stated that I enjoy watching hockey more because I have been able to learn the rules and strategies from watching it - mostly on TV and at home. Truthfully, I have been to more wrestling meets than hockey games. Let me try to explain this again. I have not read anything official on the rules or game of hockey or wrestling beyond what I find in the newspaper. Watching hockey on TV the commentators go back over plays and tell me what happened that was good and bad so I eventually gain a better understanding of the sport and get a feel for some of the ambiguities. On the several occasions which I have watched wrestling on TV, I spend a lot of time listening to the announcers talk about the past and people I don't know instead of them telling me what is going on and why these goings-ons are beneficial or detrimental to each wrestler. Again, there were a few times which I felt like the commentators are giving me a sense of what is going on and why, but those moments are few and far between. There are times when I get involved with what is going on on the mat, and that is why I am caring enough to write this, but most of the time I'm frustrated and confused by the intricacies of wrestling. Please just realize that those of us that have grown up in other areas of the country may not know as much about wrestling as you; and, if we ask questions or make statements that sound stupid we are not trying to be stupid or disrespectful. Why not try and help us, you may end up with another wrestling fan at the end of the day if you do.

Perhaps the phrase "respecting the sport" was poor choice on my part. What I meant was that from your earlier post, you said you learned to respect and enjoy hockey from watching it (you said nothing about poor announcing pointing out the intricacies), while you find watching wrestling to be frustrating, which happens whenever we watch a sport we know little about. The problem with wrestling announcers, is that in general, the only people that actually watch the sport already know these intricacies. Wrestling is not on TV or radio enough to try and point these out, since when they are on TV, their audience are already "in the know" about the sport. There's nothing wrong with asking questions, but, much like the people that scream "score a touchdown" every play at a football game, yelling "pin the guy" is just as dumb, because those are the goals, but are not met every play/match. There are quite a few people who are genuinely interested in wrestling, and many of us gurus try and help those people understand the sport better.

In a short summary of wrestling, you try and force your opponent to do what you want them to do. When a wrestler "works the head," that means they are using their body (arms usually) to force their opponent's head down, which gives them a better chance of turning them over. When a wrestler is on top of their opponent, they need to continuously try and turn their guy and get back points (near-falls). When a wrestler is on the bottom, they need to continuously try and get back into neutral position (escape), or get a reversal. You want to be on top because you then have better leverage on your opponent to get the turn and back points, and you want to get out from the bottom to both escape this position of giving up leverage, and because defensive falls are few and far between (I've only seen two or three). When both wrestler's are neutral, they can't always be backing away from their opponent, and need to keep trying to create shots. This is where the "boring" hand-fighting comes into play, because these are leverage fights, which create more opportunities for getting the takedown. Avoiding the "necessities" of fighting for position (getting out from underneath, working for back points, making/taking shots) result in stalling warnings to encourage wrestling, instead of protecting leads. I hope that brief summary can help you out.

Re: ISU vs Iowa Wrestling Thread

Thanks Cyclone62, you're the best! I knew about take downs and reversals but it makes a whole lot more sense when you think about assigning points based on leverage. I always figured since I didn't see many pins that they were hard. I've heard some people refer to wrestlers as "natural pinners;" what does this mean besides they get a lot of pins? One more question - what makes a good shot and how does a wrestler keep his shot from getting blocked?

A "natural pinner" is a wrestler that has a knack for finishing/pinning moves. They tend to be a lot stronger and just seem to be able to get their finishing moves to follow through.

A "good shot" is a shot that is set up well; one that is made while your opponent is out of position, and has a higher chance of success. The best way to keep your shot from being blocked is from getting good inside hand position, and just setting up your shot the best you can.
