Favre's streak vs Ripken's streak

Favre started in his 250th straight game yesterday. That's incredible for any position, let alone a quarterback.

So, that got me to thinking. What's more impressive. A football player playing in 250 straight games or a baseball player playing in 2,632 straight games.

I think that an argument can be made for each.

What's your opinion?

You can't dispute the numbers. Basically you just say that both spent their entire careers in their sport not missing a game.

Gotta go with Favre because he plays in a contact sport AND he can't just take a day off like Ripken finally did.

How many bone-jarring hits did Ripken take over the years?

'Nuff said.

Kinda what I thought.

At the same time, to think that Ripken didn't once break a bone, sprain something or was too sick to play is incredible.

Not including any playoff games Ripken's streak spans over 16 seasons, while Favre's at about 15.5 right now. Both are incredible given the daily wear and tear of baseball and the big hits Favre takes.

I don't discount what he did one bit. It's truly amazing.

I just think when picking between the two, it's 100x tougher to not miss a game in a contact sport.

Picking Ripken solely because of my Madden-induced hatred for God, errr, I mean Favre.

Especially when Favre was pounded into the "Frozen Thundra" a few times over the course of his career.

Re: Favre's streak vs Ripken's streak

This one's really hard, as they're equally impressive in their own rights. Baseball plays 162 games a year plus playoffs, football 16 plus playoffs. That's 10 times the opportunity for someone to get hurt. However, in football, there is contact in every play, where as contact in baseball is exception to the rule. Finally, I'm not quite sure how many injuries Ripken had to play through, but I do know that through at least the last decade Favre has played hurt almost every year. To me, the slight nod has to go to Favre with all of the props in the world to Ripken as well.

I'm probably too old school but to me Ripken's record went out the window the first game they lost due to a players strike.

Clearly, FB is more of a contact sport than BB. However, you must have never played SS with a comment like this...getting "taken out" at 2B by a guy sliding into you with metal spikes is no "walk in the park".

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I vote Ripken (no, there isn't as much contact, but there were over 10x as many chances for 1 bad thing to happen. And short stop isn't exactly the fluffiest job in baseball...)

I am a bit biased though, I did grow up an hour (or 4... depending on traffic :wacko) and was at the game he tied the record

Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State, and may her colors ever fly!
