The weekend Keeps Getting bigger
I just found out that two of the best Juco players in the country are going to be here this weekend for an official visit. Larry Asante (linebacker) and Gary Chandler (safety) had to change their orginal plan of going to Nebraska so they decide to come to Ames.
Anyone else fired up for this weekend? Huge weekend for MBB and huge weekend for FB needing a big W and having potential difference makers in town.

I don't know anything about these kids -- but for heavens sake I hope Mac isn't reintroducing the 'JUCO recruiting cure' again. That did not work out well at all -- and is part of the reason we are so young on defense today. That decision has had a long tail to it. Please tell me this recruiting is is related to just these two JUCO players -- please!!!

Yep, Cyclonereport reported that a little earlier today. Hopefully good things will come of the visit. Where did you get the information from, it was confidential info on CR.

I just saw that it was up on Cyclonereport, I wasn't trying to step on anyone's toes. I was just excited.

Not stepping on anyones toes, just wondering if the news was out in force or not. Hopefully we play a full game of football, and impress the recruits.

From what I hear we aren't putting a huge emphasis on JUCO recruiting but getting two of the best guys in the country to help the defense while we bring along some of the talent that we already have on campus can't be a bad thing.

God I hope we aren't recruiting great JUCO players that can come in immediately and help on the defensive side of the ball...that would be terrible! -
Re: The weekend Keeps Getting bigger
Chandler is the #4 JUCO player in the country and Asante is #10.

Re: The weekend Keeps Getting bigger
Yeah, that would be awful to have them lined up on the defense for two years. (please note the high levels of sarcasm.)

Re: The weekend Keeps Getting bigger
Are you guys newbie fans? Please recall ALL the way back to the late 1990's when Mac tried the strategy of recruiting JUCOs == Anyone remember that?
That is what I am talking about -- wholesale recruitment of JUCOs. That doesn't work @ ISU.
BTW == anyone want to bet today on whether either of these guys sign with us and make the field??? Any takers??

Re: The weekend Keeps Getting bigger
Recruiting newbies has not panned out much better as it takes couple years top build them up. I know that UNL is bringing in 6-8 a year because they do not have time to develop them. If it is good enough fopr UNL, why not us? From what I have seen so far this year, we could use immediate help in the backfield. Skaldany is already moaning about the loss of Robertson, Taylor and Smith. That means the cupboard is pretty bare. McC said Berg has not set the world on fire. Banks is getting by according to McC. McC says they have to play better for us to win. I believe him. Our pass defense is not the envy of the Big 12.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

1997 was a 1-win season, the lone win coming against Baylor, which ended the nation's longest losing streak, and consequently, the goal posts got torn down and thrown into lake laverne (the last time I think it's actually been done- not from lack of trying, though)
1998, if memory serves, was a 3-win season, one of the wins coming against Iowa.
1999 was a 4-win season with the majority of the losses close, including the ones against texas (3 pts) and k-state (7 pts). a few breaks go our way and 1999 was the season that we go to the bowl game instead of 2000.
2000 was the 9-win season, the first bowl appearance in 20+ years, and the first win ever.
looking at those, I think the JUCO players were one of the answers to the turnaround. they were better than what we actually had in the program at the time and contributed much to the program.

If I recall, Seneca Wallace and Tim Dobbins were JUCO's, and they're making highlite reels in the NFL... in the same game!

Re: The weekend Keeps Getting bigger
If memory serves me correctly, the 98 Iowa game was played at Kinnick, and we tore down OUR goalposts and threw them in lake laverne. My roommate made it onto SportsCenter that day for swimming in the lake next to the drowning goalpost. God I wish I had never graduated from this great University.
