The original mapmakers just made a mistake. Without the dams the flow at Rock Island would be very low at times. Now what does all that have to do with Beer. The headwaters from the Coors beer plant eventually flow down the Missouri. Umm. Ahh... Geez, what do I say to this?
Being from Davenport (across from Rock Island) I take pride in the Mississippi being the longest river in the U.s.
Also, when we didn't have the dams we had Abe Lincoln sueing people left and right when a riverboat got snarled in weeds and sank.
And, if you look at river lengths in the world, The Mississippi/Missouri combined is only 3rd longest behind the Amazon and the Nile, and that INCLUDES all the tributaries (Ohio, Tenessee, etc).
The one thing the Missouri has going for it is the headwaters. But by the time it's reached St. Louis it's been spoiled by touching Nebraska! Did this confuse anyone as much as the original post? Sorry! Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice? Sorry! Oh, my goodness. Now throw the Des Moines river in there as a size reference. Bring it home to mid-Iowa.
Got to study for my mid-term tomorrow. Be back on later.
