Re: It's The Money Stupid
Jeff,
I bet Dano would tell you what you want if you met him one on one.
He'd be commiting suicide to say what you want publicly. I remember when Jim Walden said that Ames was a place that never would have a good coach and if they did, he'd move on to greener pastures quick(I'm paraphrasing). Jim was a guy who would say those kind of things and Jim was gone not too long after that.
Mac's not that stupid.

All the Cyclone blow-hards told me all we have to do is win and the money will follow. Well guess what- we have our first 9 game win season, our first bowl victory and a string of wins over Iowa, and look where that's gotten us: still tied for last in Athletic Budgets in the B12.
It rips me to no end that Iowa out-donates us 3x - and it's been at this rate for as long as I've been watching donations. Also, Iowa has EVERY one of their MBB schollies endowed - every single schollie is paid for by donations. That's a huge financial relief.
I'm not trying to use Iowa as the measuring stick for where we need to be, but I seriously wonder if this state is big enough to support two top-level Div 1 FB programs.
IMO, the only way were gonna be successful, is if the fans step up and donate first - not wait for the wins, or the Regents, the State, the ISU Foundation, etc. We the fans need to step up with donations.

****** I heard 45 min of the call in show tonight, and they have resorted to sending other coaches from other sports in to talk about what a great man Dan is.
Now this may be true, but he is so afraid to say anything that is truly self critical, that there is no reality in what he is saying. I don't care about who we are playing, and how great they are. I want to hear him say you know what I have ****ed up a lot, and I haven't won that one game that makes a program. But God Dammit we can get it done because I have a vision.
Instead we get "we are one of 54 teams that are undefeated at home, and by gosh we need to coach better (although my coaches are out there working every day) and play better. WTF!!!!! can anyone really relate to this characture of a coach any more.
He has become a joke, this team is awful, and they look disorganized, like they aren't even being coached. You see the frustration growing in a lot of the players. Maybe that one big win will turn everything around ( this weekend seems like a perfect place to start), but I have my doubts. Darts I am not going to argue with you or anyone else on this board anymore about Dan or his future, I will just keep my opinions about that to myself. The point of my post was we need to be able to pay top dollar for assistant coaches to both get them to come to ISU and to be able to keep them here, regardless of who is the head coach. Urban Meyer could be ISU's coach but if he couldn' bring in and keep good assistant coaches b/c he couldn't pay them he wouldn't win here. There isn't a college football program in the country that is successful that doesn't have great assistants. and the elite programs have and keep the best assistants b/c they pay them. It isn't the head coaches of the elite that make them great.

Mac's not that stupid. It isn't the words, it's the sentiment. One of the things that allowed Johnny to get away with being 18 games over .500 was his candor. Hell Larry had candor. When they sucked they admitted it. I just want to see Mac be REAL for once.
I did meet Dan once years ago when I was coaching, and when he left the other coaches said there is a man who is in way over his head. He should know what he is and be a coordinator. I have never forgotten that, and have looked for years to find evidence to the contrary.
Mac has gotten the improvements that Walden dreamed of, and I agree that it isn't enough, but now he has to come through with the goods. And if he can't do it, then at least stop insulting us by speaking in "spin" it is demeaning to all of us, and makes us look foolish to other fanbases.

Okay I'm just a bit confused? I'm guessing you were a football coach and who were the other coaches?? Are we talking college level coaches?

Do you not know how to ignore it?
I know for a fact, D-Mac says very different things to his team/staff behind closed doors.
It's D-Macs "spin" and positive attitude that's helped get this program up from the 1-10 seasons.

I don't want to name drop, but it was a San Antonio area HS coaches conference right when the Big 12 was formed. And ironically it was a coach from the area whose sons were college QBs, one won the heisman who said that about this coach.

G MAC has related with people already, and he doesn't try to talk over their heads, better to confuse people than to have to come up with answers, like Mac tries to.
I have used coach speak for the sake of the newspapers, but when talking to groups of fans, I always found that candor was the best route.

Re: It's The Money Stupid
Okay, point well taken. Mac is what he is. I don't think we're going to change him.
