Good article. However, I guess I don't feel like a majority of fans think negatively. Maybe the people I hang out with just aren't negative people but I just don't see it. I see people who are disappointed at the end of a season but I know a lot of fans pour their heart into ISU. I think you'll find on the message boards that there are only 4 or 5 truly negative, doomsday-type posters. Most others are positive or at least realistic about what they say.

Not in CO anymore but I'm not changing my name :)
So I can't disagree with your junk Urb? You don't like my opinion, tough. I think you and Jeremy are wrong in your prediction. Dan McCarney has delivered to you the winningest decade in Cyclone football history. That is since the beginning of Cyclone football Urb. Do even recognize what that means? Do you even recognize that to get to the next level you may need to pass through this one? No you don't recgonize crap, all you do is whine.
I personally have been saying I think we can go 9-3 this year. I dont know what games we will loose...but I will say that I think out of our 3 tough roads games (Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma) that our offence will be able to come out of them with at least one victory, and out of our 2 toughest home games (nebraska and Texes Tech) we should be able to win at least one of those. I personally think that we will have easy wins against Toledo, UNLV, UNI, and then K State, Kansas, Colorado, and god help us all, Missouri, mainly because they are the last 4 games of the season, and we should be playing are best football. So we should have 7 easy wins in my opinion, and then out of the remaining 5 "tough" games, I think we should be able to get 2 of them, if not more. So that is my "positive" prediction I have been using since the conclusion of the Houston Bowl last year......9-3, if we beat Nebraska, we win the north, and no less then an Alamo Bowl apearence. I know there has been alot of questions about our defence...but John Skladany has always had his defence ready, and he will teach these new guys how to do it!
No, I don't just whine, I just don't happen to have your Pollyanna view of things. I don't believe that it takes 12 years to establish a winning FB program. KSU did it in less time and they were in much worse shape than ISU ever dreamed of being. Joe Tiller did it at Purdue IMMEDIATELY. Fry did it at Iowa in under 3 years.
As for BB, I wanted a different guy as the head coach and hated it when ST and FD decided to leave. SO SUE ME.
If you believe we're going 14-0 or 13-1 or whatever in FB this fall, GOOD FOR YOU. I believe that I am going to wake up next to Cindy Crawford tomorrow morning in my Beverly Hills mansion. After this I will drive down to Hollywood to practice with the Rolling Stones in my Maserati. You know, I've been positively believing this for 30 years now and it still hasn't happened. Dang, maybe I just need to believe even harder.
Next year the Great Pumpkin will come Charlie Brown and oh yeah, Lucy will let you kick that FB as well.
Actually, the disappointment and frustration indicates that fans believe it is possible for big things to happen in Ames and they are mad when it does not. I believe JP even had a quote saying he was glad that people were mad about losing.
This is a great true statement. It is a good thing that peopele get mad. From about 1985-1999 there was no outcry when we lost because nobody cared. Now everyone cares. Everyone can post Kum-Ba-Yah messages all they want, but some people are just so negative you will never change them, and until there is consistency people are going to get upset. People do expect more which is a good thing. The doom and gloom is just a defense mechanism that some people put up because they are waiting for something bad to happen, and they are perfectly justified, because it always does. I don't believe in self-fulfilling prophecies. I start out every year hopeful and I always will, but I'm not shocked if we crash and burn because I've seen it too many times.
and let me add.....one thing I have enjoyed about this site so far is that people do not argue with or slander other people based on their posts.....I used to see this all the time on ESPN boards...and I quit going to them because of it. We are all on the same team here...If you dont like someone elses opinion then so be it. But just let it go people, not everyone is going to always agree with everyone else. I dont think I am the only one here who thinks this...but please, no arguing veiwpoints through posts, it one of the greatest things I have enjoyed about this site so far!
See Urb, you're a fruitcake. You immediately dismiss the argument when you are given facts you can't refute and then go off on some stupid incoherent tangent that no one understands. I don't believe we are going 14-0 or 13-1 but to rule it out in May is ********. To ride DMac's jock in May is silly and destructive. KSU, Fry and Tiller were different times and different conferences and they stooped to some pretty questionable things to get it done. You're being ridiculous and totally missing the point of the original post which is just because a segment of Cyclone Nation has the fortitude of an amoeba doesn't me the rest of us can't believe.
Hey URB, I perfer an Aston Martin Vanquish. Make it happen baby!
I'm a member at Cyclone Report too, so I've seen people going nuts over this thing all day. People are probably going to think I'm a total *** for this, but it seems like cheesy sentimental tripe to me. I am always positive, but like URB said, I thought we'd beat Baylor, Kansas, and Mizzou last year. And the year before.
Honestly, when I look at the schedule next year with my heart, I think we could conceivably beat every team. When I look at it with my head, I think we go 7-5.
I've been one to get downright ****** at discombobulated and URB. They are important posters though, because it's good to have voices on either side of a debate whether you like them or not.
"Isn't that the exact kind of unjustifiable arrogance we despise in Hawkeye fans?"
Yes URBCLONE, yes it is.
I find it ironic how this article was meant to unite fans.....:) Yay free speech.
Remember that stressed spelled backwards is desserts!
"The New England Patriots: As annoying as the Yankess, just with 23 fewer titles."
I started at ISU the fall of 98 and was there 4.5 years. My tenure at ISU was probably during the most successful era in ISU athletics.
How many people can say they went to ISU and NEVER lost to Iowa in football? We had some of the most successful seasons ever in football, men's and women's basketball, and let's not forget Cael Sanderson. Hilton was THE place to be in the winter and Jack Trice became more than just a background for some good tailgating. In fact, I remember my freshman year in 98 was the last year before they put the indestructable goal posts in and we were tearing down the goal post for a win over Ball State! We wouldn't be rushing the field for a win over them now.
Football: Those who are critical of McCarney need to get a reality check. Ten years ago we would be laughing if someone said we'd go to 5 bowl games with him as the coach. D-Mac has taken the program from a no-win situation to respectable. Yes we're probably mediocre right now but you don't turn a program with no tradition or winning history into a national power overnight. I always ask people who they think would come to ISU and do a better job than Mac? You can't honestly think a big-name coach would take the ISU job even at it's present state. People need to support D-Mac and realize that there was a time where we would have killed for a 6 or 7 win season over a 1 or 2 win season.
Men's BB: 98 was Larry's first season. I knew after that 15-15 season people were not high on Larry but let's face it; Floyd did not leave the cupboards stocked with much other than Marcus Fizer. Larry brought in Tinsley and Horton and the rest is history. He's probably right up there with Orr in terms of coaching greats at ISU and it's unfortunate his legacy will mostly be know for that 1 night down in Mizzou. I think we all now realize what a poor hiring Wayne Morgan was and that had a lot to do with no one wanting to work for BVD. Getting rid of Bruce was the best thing to happen to the department because Gene Smith left him a department in good shape and Bruce left Pollard a big challenge to clean up a mess. This time we actually had good coaches interested in the ISU job because of Pollard. If Bruce was still here I'm not so sure we would have been able to get G-Mac.
Women's BB: Bill Fennelly deserves a life contract at ISU. When I arrived on campus the women's team was just starting to take off. I think one day we'll see Bill's banner hanging from the rafters as he's probably done even a better job than D-Mac as far as turning around a program.
Jamie Pollard: In his short time as AD he's already accomplished HUGE things that would never have happened under Bruce's watch. I think with his leadership ISU is going to become one of the elite atheltics department in the Big 12 and Iowa State will gain much more national exposure than ever. Notice how most of the negative things around ISU all happened under BVD's watch yet under Smith and Pollard everything seems much more positive.
I feel truely blessed to have gone to ISU during that era where we had some of the best teams in ISU history. I hope under Pollard's leadership that becomes the norm.
Careful Pulse and BryceC,
You might wound Cy-Lyte's tender sensibilities. As I stated in an earlier post, I believe we will go 6-6 this fall. This is exactly what Jeremy is predicting as well. I guess he is a doom-and-gloom guy too?
I guess to be a fan we are all just supposed to shut up and support whatever coach is dealing up. So, if we are running up the gut with an injured Stevie Hicks in an attempt to run out the clock we are not to question it EVER.
Nope, it is all about our positive feelings as fans. Why, just like Ben Bruns said last fall - we the fans have to take some of the blame for losing to Baylor. Funny though, the same positive people who criticize fans for criticizing DM say that the power of positive fan thinking can carry a team through. When we lost to Baylor though, they make statements like "DM didn't fumble the ball the player did". So, it is the fans that determine outcomes but coaches are above reproach?????
As for riding his jock in May, he's earned it. 52-77 over 11 years, 0-6 in OT games, 2-45 against Big Twelve teams that finish the season with a winning record earns you criticism. THOSE ARE FACTS CYLYTE. ARGUE WITH THOSE PLEASE!
I agree with Bryce, I want us to win every game this year. I think we could win every game this year. I do expect us to win 7 football games this year. Anything more than that is just frosting. I would normally always be very optimistic and think we could win all but maybe one game this year but I just think we have one of the hardest schedules we could have imagined this year. All of our quality games are on the road and against very tough teams.
In basketball, I am probably the biggest optimist on here because I think you couldn't have asked for a better coach. McDermott will do more here than anybody could imagine. He has the heart, desire, assistant, and charisma to be both the Johnny Orr and Tim Floyd. He can naturally make any potential recruit love him and he can actually coach as well. He's the best of both worlds in college basketball. It wasn't the sexy hire, but it was the right hire.
With Jamie Pollard and GMac, ISU will be consistently in the top three of the conference in 3 years. I know I'm trying to get everybody I know to get season tickets this year, everybody else should try if they can as well.
And please people, regardless of people's opinion, please keep it enjoyable around here. I have worked really hard not to ban or punish people based on what they post, however, that can change if people can't stop the name calling and personal attacks. We all are die-hard Clone fans that have our own personal opinions. I love seeing the debate, but hate the negativity that people resort to when they can't argue the facts or figures. We've got a great site and forum going, let's keep it going that way.
A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.
I feel that Dan McCarney is a great COACH, hios problem is that he can not bring in the big time recruits. I mean how many other people do you know that can take walk ons, and turn them into starters and NFL players. He knows how to coach the players and turn guys into players, and he does the best with what he has. Sure some of his play calling has been questionable, but I am not the coach and that is not my call.
Being a die hard Illinois fan for most of my life I know what it is like to be on the top of the college world and the bottom. In 2002 Illinois won the big 10 and then nearly beat LSU in the Sugar bowl. But one year later we went 5-7 and didnt qualify for a bowl game. Then the next three years we have only won ONE big 10 football game. Talk about a disgrace. Like Brew I was never a Cyclone fan until I got accepted and decided to go to ISU. But I know exactly how Cyclone fans must have felt after 2002 too. I never want to see that happen again. I cant wait for my first Cyclone game on August 31, only 119 days away.
Nice, well thought out and expressed post. Unfortunately, it's all been said before on the message boards here and elsewhere. My question to you is : why must all Cyclone fans have the same view of the athletics programs? Is there not room for disagreement amongst us? Your Cubs analogy is not entirely true. I've lived in the Chicago area my whole life, and there are tons of Cubs fans who are entirely negative about the whole organization. The Trib's always going to spin the Cubs positively because they own them for Chrissakes! As for the Red Sox, I have to say when I lived in Boston, I found their fans to be the biggest "sky is falling" crowd I've ever seen. But they go to the games and root like hell for 'em, which is great. I'm just glad I'm a White Sox fan, but I digress.
I too went to as many games as possible as a student, and consider myself a die-hard fan. Hey, I was there for some of the lowest points; like losing to UNI at home. That one just about made me sick to my stomach. That said, my optimism for the football team has waned recently becuause of things that continually aren't addressed within the program. I just feel we could do better than DMac as a head coach, and it's extremely frustrating for me to watch him committ what I feel are the same coaching mistakes year after year. Sure we were so close in a lot of games last year, but I look at those games as lost because of poor game day coaching, rather than because we were outplayed by our opponent. Recruiting has definitely improved, but has yet to reach an elite level.
The idea that all fans who don't think we'll go undefeated next year are all unhappy in life and will ultimately sandbag the team's chances is a pretty silly assessment. As fans we all don't have love Mac or hate WM or love LE or hate LE or think GMac is the next Wooden or not. All fans have different opinions and takes on Cyclone athletics. The day we as fans are all thinking exactly alike is the day these very message boards will cease to be interesting and fun places to visit. I for one will always support the Cyclones through thick and thin, and when the teams exceed my expectations or prove them dead wrong, I'll happily admit it.
