David Spencer will leave team
Nov. 3, 2006 RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -UC Riverside coach David Spencer has been granted a medical leave of absence, and will be replaced on an interim basis by associate head coach Vonn Webb.
"Until he is well," director of athletics Stan Morrison replied Friday when asked how long Spencer's medical leave of absence would last.
The Highlanders went 5-23 last year in the 57-year-old Spencer's first year as coach.
Spencer issued a statement through the school saying it was in the best interests of himself, his family and the basketball program to take the leave of absence and "focus on regaining my strength and health."
"I understand that there will be many questions regarding my medical leave, but I request that the public respect my family's privacy during this difficult time in our lives," he said.
