The wife and I are making the trip, headed out Tuesday night and staying in Denver.
Who else is headed to CU for the game?
EDIT: We're looking for suggestions/ideas for what we can do while in Denver. We'll have part of Wednesday and all of Thursday & Friday. Maybe some of Sunday too. Can't ski, the knee won't let me. We love "the sights", so for you Denver experts - spill the secrets.
First vacation in, well - ever - that we haven't had it planned out. I kinda like it. |

Downtown Denver is pretty cool, 16th St.Mall to see the wierd people. Spend a day at Boulder because it is a cool college town. Take in a Nuggets/Avalanche game to see the Pepsi Center. (Things are expensive and traffic is NOT like anything in Iowa.) Instead of going to the Zoo/Museum, I suggest going to the bars, You will have much more fun when you're hammered.....HITMAN

If you like beer, take a tour of the Coors plant.

I would also recommend checking out Red Rocks even if there isn't a concert. It is a nice, quick drive from Denver and the view from the top is incredible. You will also probably see lots of wildlife out there too. 16th Street Mall is great for people watching. The freaks generally aren't out as often at night. (The shelters close at 8 in the winter).
Boulder is a cool town, if you don't mind the traffic.
Avoid 5 Points and portions of Saudi Aurora and you should be fine.
Enjoy!

Was going but not now, gave my tickets to family in Denver. My attidude towards this team is in the dumps.
"The Peoples Republic of Boulder" is OK, Golden Mountian and such.
The updated downtown is cool. Need to spend some time in Rockies. Denver traffic sucks, don't be in any hurry to get anywhere. Got you Tom-Tom or GPS with you?

I think we're going to check out that 16th Street mall and check out the Coors plant. Would like to see Red Rock too.
Any other suggestions or must-sees?

Coors is a good, free tour. If you like beer though, I'd also suggest the New Belgium Brewery up in Ft Collins (makers of Sunshine Wheat and Fat Tire). South of Denver in Colorado Springs you can also see the Garden Of the Gods, or tour the Airforce Acadamey.
What type of food do you like? Theres some great eating around too.

Steaks, we both love a good steak (Prime Rib, Rib-eye, NY Strip)
Mexican & Italian too. Oh, we're staying in Westminster - 5010 W 88th Place - if ya know some cool places close to that. Not a requirement though.
Airforce Academey sounds very cool. I love stuff like that.
Thx!

If you get there, check out the Old Town area. Some really great bars and food. My favorite is Beaujo's Pizza (also has other locations). Several breweries to visit besides NB.
My wife and I are going to the game. We also plan on going to the ISU tailgate held at Millenium Harvest House Hotel in Boulder. They have a beer garden and it is walking distance to the stadium.
See you guys there!!!

Here are some choices for eats that I am familiar with in Downtown Denver and the area
Microbreweries in LoDo (Lower Downtown)
Wynkoop Brewery
Breckenridge Brewery
Mexican in LoDo
The Rio Grande on Blake Street........great Margaritas
Hacienda Colorado (Westminster)........two page tequila menu!!
Italian in LoDo
Maggianos in the Denver Pavillons downtown.
Other good places downtown:
Rialto Cafe - 16th Street Mall
The Broker - You can get a table in the old bank vault...pricey but good. (17th Street)
McCormick's in LoDo - Great Steak
BD's Mongolian Grille - popular spot downtown
hope that gives you some ideas........

If you're looking to do the "outdoor thing" but not go skiing, here are my suggestions:
Drive up Lookout Mountain after dark to take in all of Denver at night (great views). If you brought/bring winter clothes, head on up to Loveland Pass or Berthoud Pass (Hwy 6 for Loveland, Hwy 40 for Berthoud) and chuck around some snowballs, sledding, etc. If you're going to do the Red Rocks thing, hike around there, hike around Matthews-Winters Open Space park and take in the views of Denver from the top of the "Hogbacks." Since you are there, slide on down into Morrison and stop at the Morrison Inn - huge, killer Margaritas. If you want swanky but good, go to Cafe Prague (great date idea) also in Morrison. Not too pricey, but pricey enough to keep out the wankers and gapers! You could also tool up Hwy 73 between Morrison (Red Rocks) and Evergreen. Gorgeous drive, nice highway, all along a gorgeous Bear Creek Canyon!
If you like gold mine tours, DON'T do the Argo Goldmine in Idaho Springs, go to the Phoenix Goldmine west of Idaho Springs (40 mins west of Downtown). It's a lot more authentic, a family runs it, really nice and good people, plus of course you get to keep the gold if you find any :)
Restaurants have been covered, although I would say McCormick's is known for their seafood than their beef; you can't beat Iowa beef (I grew up in Iowa and just moved out here two years ago and you can't compare) so that's my take. There are also tons of great open space parks around town if you want to be outside, so hit me up if you want details there too. From where you are, for the wifey, hit up Flat Irons Crossing Mall (HWY 36 - Road to Boulder) and Flat Iron Circle. Think Jordan Creek but bigger w/ better outdoor stores.
Anything else hit us all up who live out here!
