I attended his football camp as a high school junior and senior. I was a center, and he spent a lot of time working with us all week - I actually got a few minutes of personal coaching from Mac. Not that I was any good, but he still came over to help me with a drill we were running. I grew up in Ames and he recruited some of the guys I played with (Greving, Nick Rahfeldt, Dave Knapp, Jamie Burrows), and a couple of times before the camp started I talked to him about those guys. By the end of the week my junior year, he called me by name and he recognized me the first day I showed up my senior year. I think he could have done the same for each of the thousand or so kids that rolled through every summer. Coach McCarney brought a passion, an intensity and a confidence to this program that I'd never seen before, and he seemed to touch just about everybody that was lucky enough to work with him. He is a true Cyclone. Good luck in the future, Coach.
The Florida State game, all the Iowa games, the Nebraska game and the bowl games. Bowl season used signal time for me to watch basketball. Actually October meant time to wait for basketball. Mac changed all that, and just the endless positive attitude. He'd get everybody jacked up.
Florida State. I have every game since Independence Bowl 2001 recorded on tape, and have watched the Florida State game so many times, I'm amazed that it's still watchable.
If only I could get all my games on DVD... (Florida State especially).
My four favorites. Iowa in '98 - I was there. KC vs FSU and I was there. The Insight Bowl, wish I was there and taking down the Huskers twice and I was there. Hey, thats five.
