Telephone Trophy?

Did any of the players rush over and get this thing or were they mostly focusing on McCarney? Personally I think this rivalry and trophy needs more press. Mizzou got what they deserved today. Rat b@stards

The funniest thing is they all rushed over to get it, and it was NOT out on the sidelines. Some lackey from Missouri had to go rooting through one of the chests to find it in a box. It was pretty silly watching it all go down.

They probably figured there was no way that they'd get beat and actually have to give up the trophy. Morons. Glad to finally have it back after being in the enemy's hands for the last 4 years.

Boy, I'll say. I saw the players hoisting Mac up in the air, and then I saw some random trophy tilting its way along behind him, but didn't have more than a glimpse of it. I remember wondering what it was, then figuring that it was some award or commemoration being given to McCarney.

I didn't even know there WAS a "Telephone Trophy". Hell, I didn't even know we were rivals with Mizzou any more than with other Big 12 schools. I assumed that, if anything, the animosity towards Mizzou came from their crushing our conference title hopes the last two years and us wanting revenge for that.

I'm all for travelling trophies; I think they're a really cool tradition. I just didn't know we had more than the CyHawk. Can someone give me a bit more background on the trophy and rivalry? Cool.

Telephone Trophy

When the field phones were tested prior to the Iowa State-Missouri game of 1959 in Ames it was found that both teams could hear each other. The problem was solved by game time, but not without considerable worry on the part of the coaches. The Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. of Ames had a trophy made and presented it to Iowa State to be awarded each year to the team winning the game. An odd sidelight to the whole affair was that the same thing happened to Missouri later that year in a game played at Columbia.

How about the video of Mac picking up the Phone off the top in the locker room and announcing to the team " The Bowl scouts are on the phone" oh what a classic moment that was....
