New Coach - Nice Guy or *****?
We've had 12 years of the nicest guy you could ever meet - Dan McCarney.
Classy in every way, even when he was "fired" he thanked Jamie Pollard. Never said a bad word about anyone related to ISU. Or for that matter, he never said a bad word about anyone.
Mac is the epitome of nice guys finishing last.
So, for our new coach, - leaving out the actual people you'd like to see - what type of coach do we want to lead our Cyclones onto the field in 2007 and beyond?
A nice guy that everyone loves? Or a guy that many call a ***** and love to hate?
Should our new coach always be complimentary of the other team and his own players? Or call people out from time to time?

Re: New Coach - Nice Guy or *****?
A successful coach is going to have to be both.
Also, if you don't think Mac had to be a ***** at times, whether in practice or what have you, you're drinking the koolaid. :)

Re: New Coach - Nice Guy or *****?
I agree with both. We need a guy to be tough on the older players who will only see this new guy trying to coach them, and we need a guy who will be the nice guy to the new recruits and/or underclassmen to keep them around and happy.

Re: New Coach - Nice Guy or *****?
how about a consistent winner?
I have no problem with a *****...just a long as he is not an ***...like Alford

Gimme a guy that evokes the same feelings
as Spurrier or Hawkins. Their fans love them but thats it. I want some swagger and I want some nuts. Gimme somebody who doesn't feel the need to make excuses for ISU as far as recruiting or schedule strength..

Oh - and a guy that knows how to put his foot
on your throat and never let up until the last dying gasp has left the lungs of the opponents.....

Tommie Frazier is available
Touchdown Tommie just left Doane College by mutual agreement. His two year record was 3-17. There were 40 players on the roster when he left - there were 120 when he arrived. He was neither popular, nor successful. Some think success on the field makes tyranny look like good pedagogy. We will not compromise on character. The coach must be a good rep for the U - and a father figure for the team. JP's choices so far indicate the kind of person we are going to get.

Re: New Coach - Nice Guy or *****?
I want a coach who is not afraid to play with confidence. That said I don't want a coach who is hated because he is a dick to other teams and people. One "golden boy" in the state of iowa is enough.

Re: New Coach - Nice Guy or *****?
I want a coach like GMac...a nice guy...someone who makes his players want to play...willing to be forceful at times, but will not sugar coat things. If the team plays bad...just say we played like crap. He should be personable and willing to support ISU no matter what. After all the coach is what represents the university when he is out in the public.

In one game, he was up something like 47-9, and went for two. When asked about it after the game his response was along the lines of "It's not my job to stop our team. It's theirs."

Re: New Coach - Nice Guy or *****?
I don't care if the new coach is as nice and sweet as a sweet old lady or is mean and nasty as Hitler. I want a new coach that wins and wins big games against great teams. Winning cures everything. Nobody is going to care how the new coach is as long as he's winning.

***** with onions to match, why not? You see what 12 years of nice got us.

Re: New Coach - Nice Guy or *****?
I think JP sees how much McCarney meant to the people of Ames. Obviously this was because of his personality. And by no means, do I seem him shying away from another individual who can bring the same thing.
The football program does not some fire in it. Someone with a little more energy,if thats possible. Mac had the fire, the ambition, the drive to take this program forward but unfortunately failed doing so.
So who really is out there that has a different perspective than Dan. Probably no one, but its finding that person who has a successful vision for winning, and recruiting for this program.
I don't know a lot about our coaching prospects, but if one of them has the personality that Dan had, with the success of winning that we are looking for. Then thats our man.
