Re: Mark May on National Television -- ISU and Coker
Why walk into Coker with 1.75 mil. He is in talent rich Florida, knows other area's based upon his coaching portfolio. So what caused the downslide?? He would provide hope, yet intrigue.

Re: Mark May on National Television -- ISU and Coker
Anyone that thinks Coker is the answer is NUTS!
Recruiting - many say that should be our #1 priority. Miami has tradition, sits in the middle of a recruiting hotbed, and Coker took them from a talent rich NFL caliber team to a 6-6 team that is obviously at a different talent level in a few short years!
Integrity - yes we live in Iowa and we expect that. I don't think additional commentary is needed.
X's and O's - hell, most any other candidate I've seen is equal or better here.
What's the gain?

Re: Mark May on National Television -- ISU and Coker
Miami was Thug U. long before Coker got the job and probably will be long after. Did anyone hear their AD talk about the big fight? She acted like it wasn't a huge deal, and they handed out suspensions accordingly, hoping that people would have short attention spans about it. I'm not completely sold on Coker, but I'm not completely against it either. It makes me worry that he took a power school and made them marginal. I'm sure there were other factors, but what if it had a lot to do with the coach? -
Re: Mark May on National Television -- ISU and Coker
I guess my question to the people that would want Coker instead of an up and coming coach like Kelly would be this...why would we want to hire a guy who left a program in much worse condition than he inherited it? He won a national title with Butch Davis' kids, then slowly degraded the program, even though he kept recruiting thugs...(see 6-6 this year with Fla. International brawl). And imho, 6-6 at Miami (Fla) is about the equivalent of 1-11 in Ames. And last of all, what coach couldn't bring in stud athletes to play for the Miami Hurricanes?

Re: Mark May on National Television -- ISU and Coker
He has never won big with his own players. There are always scandals going on in Miami. He wouldn't know how to recruit players when he isn't coaching for a top notch program. I could recruit better players to Miami than him. And besides, Miami (besides the title years with leftover players from Davis) has underachieved almost every year. He also is old and won't be around for long.

This thread is one of the best!!!!! LOL

Re: Mark May on National Television -- ISU and Coker
I do not want the coach of Da U/Thug U coaching our program. I will take a class act like DMAC who will actually emphasize charachter over the football version of Wayne Morgan

Re: Mark May on National Television -- ISU and Coker
No offense, but I doubt an old guy like Coker is going to give a crap about Iowa State.
Remember that stressed spelled backwards is desserts!
"The New England Patriots: As annoying as the Yankess, just with 23 fewer titles." -
Re: Mark May on National Television -- ISU and Coker
WOW -- Does anyone remember Jimmy Johnson at "Thug U"? If you think Coker and the brawl this year was bad, rewind and look at every damn brawl that happened when old Jimmy was there. And yet I hear how everyone wants to bring in Jimmy Johnson to Ames. The only reason it got such national attention this year was because of how messed up the world is nowadays and we can't take a little fight. Watching the game, I thought it was like any other baseball bench clearing brawl. Hell, I had worse fights in my high school football locker room.
If you don't want Coker, fine. But claiming he is a bad candidate because he came from the "Thug U" environment is just stupid. I'd rather take Thug U's leftovers than another Hayden Fry baby.

This Isn't a Either/Or Deal

We do not need to go out & hire an "a-hole" because we want a winning program. By all appearance Greg McDermott will win games, recruit quality kids, make them go to class and not put up with crap on the court. I'd be very surprised if JP doesn't bring in a FB coach with the same values.

Re: Mark May on National Television -- ISU and Coker
FWIW, I think some posters here are making the common mistake of being underinformed and overopinionated. Coker had done a lot in his years at Miami to clean up the program. I know this because I live in the Florida Keys and see the Miami Herald newspaper every single day. When there have been off-field transgresssions, he has handled them swiftly and appropriately (Their leading wide receiver was suspended indefinitely after a "thug" like incident this last season). What you need to remember about the brawl this season is that (can it be?) there was a 2nd team on the field just as guilty (if not more so, since they started it) as Miami for what you saw on the ESPN replays that week.
I am by no means an ardent defender of the "U". And, while I think Coker would be a big-name hire at the very least, I don't know how well he would do in Ames. Probably at least the same as McCarney, likely a bit better. However, I do not care for uninformed opinions.

This is the best comment in this whole damn thread...ISU's football program under "Saint Mac" has had its share of bad apples too, I won't bother mentioning their names...
I was also wondering if any knew the graduation rate for DMac...

Re: Mark May on National Television -- ISU and Coker
are you kidding? a guy who can't win in miami isn't going to win in ames.
WE NEED AN OVERACHIEVER, NOT AN UNDERACHIEVER.
