Why is this still a secret?

Seriously, what is the need for secrecy at this point. Everyone STILL seems to be operating under speculation & rumor. We are convinced we have hired Kelly, CMU message board is convinced his is staying, and MSU message board is ****** that they hired Grantham instead of Kelly. I just don't understand the need to keep everyone in the dark now that a contract has been signed. I guess this is Pollard's way of getting more people to Hilton tomorrow???

I'm betting JP wants to make a production of the whole thing and make it a surprise. (For people not on the message boards, it will be.) Not sure how the local media is handling it since it's still a "rumor."

I am wondering why it has not been confirmed, that I know of. If Kelly is our new coach, should'nt we be hearing of a special CMU team meeting or something similar that would sort of confirm the speculation here?

Pretty dangerous strategy if you ask me.

Although I trust Pollard, it would be nice to give fans time to process so we can make a warm welcome....

Re: Why is this still a secret?

    Three reasons:

    1. Drama equals publicity.

    2. You don't want the publicity during negotiations for many reasons including: public support/outcry could negatively affect negotiations; certain media (hint: rhymes with douchebagister) could sabotage negotiations by, let's say for example, printing photos of the candidates company car on the front page; and less likely dirty influnces on candidate by rivals or coaches with axes to grind.

    3. Pollard likes to laugh at us after a long day negotiating.

Re: Why is this still a secret?

This could really backfire on Pollard doesn't reveal until the new coach walks out of the Hilton tunnel. Escpecially if it is someone like Price. There will be more jaws dropping than hands clapping. It could be a very embarassing moment for ISU.

Re: Why is this still a secret?

Can anyone refresh my memory? I can't remember if there was word of "team meetings" etc with UNI before Gmac was introduced. I seem to remember wondering if it would really be gmac up until he walked into hilton. How well did we know that gmac was the guy?

Re: Why is this still a secret?

It's not a secret anymore. It was a very well kept secret until the past couple of days but more and more started to leak out as more parties got involved. It was easy to keep things quiet when only Pollard and Harris were involved but once you started getting the admins at CMU involved, it was only a matter of time until it came out.
A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

As I recall, yes, Gmac did hold a team meeting at UNI the morning of his ISU announcement and this meeting was leaked to the public early in the day. . He held the meeting and then came to Ames. Perhaps the next coach will do the same, morning team meeting then fly into Ames for an evening announcement.

GMac held a meeting at UNI with the players and then one at ISU before the announcement.

Great post. Reason #3 is the best.
