His third cousin's sister once dated a guy who looked like Hayden Fry. Maybe that is it.
Or maybe it was his third cousin's sister looks like Hayden Fry. I don't know, but that is as close as we need to get.
Chizik does look a little like Fennelly, does that count as a connection?
Last I knew, Fennelly was at ISU, not EIU.
Well I guess I was thinking more on the overall state of Iowa ties.
It's funny listening to KXNO this morning and Iowa's insecurity and infeority comlex comes shining through. Last week, ISU fans didn't want Jay Norvell because he coached at ISU and played at Iowa. Now, there's grumblings that Chizik isn't an Iowan. Which is it that Iowa State fans want? Even the Register has jumped on the Iowan bandwagon (big surprise there) in that Randy Peterson wrote that one of Chizik's assistants better have ties to Iowa.
If Chizik is getting $1.5 million per year for his assistants, does it matter where they are from?
I thought peterson's comment on having an Iowan or someone who's spent some time in the state for an assistant wasn't jumping on a bandwagon. It's just a good move if you're hoping to build really strong relationships with Iowa High school coaches as Chiz mentioned he definitely wanted to do.
Regarding Randy Peterson, the best thing that Chizik can do is listen to what RP says, and then do the opposite.
I really haven't seen any grumbling on this board regarding Gene Chizik not having Iowa ties. If you are talking about callers to KXNO, then there's a good chance that the grumblers are really Hawkeye fans disguising themselves as Clone fans, and engaging in the normal Hawkete attempts to demean any positive thing that ISU does. They learned that from Hayden Fry.
And, unfortunately, there is a small group of Cyclone followers who pretty much act like the aforementioned Hawk fans, criticizing every move made by ISU. They are just looking for excuses not to donate money.
Most of us just wanted the right guy for the job, regardless of where he is from. Chizik seems like a great hire in that regard. That being said, he would be wise to get an "Iowa guy" on the recruiting staff with existing relationships with high school coaches in-state and in the rest of the midwest. It's more about recruiting than anything else.
I thought he looked great wearing an ISU tie.
Or was that not what this post was about........
He's an Iowan now, and that's all that matters.
