    Re: USA chant was clever

I don't know if any of you watching on TV noticed but for the 2nd free throw us in Cyclone Alley countered with a Czech Republic chant. I don't know if many were able to hear it though because I don't think everyone in the group could hear the USA chant and they didn't know what we were doing.

Actually, they meant to chant "U-N-I," but couldn't remember how to spell it.

The USA chant wasn't too inventive. The Go to Class chant for Mike makes more since for a basketball game chant.

Did anyone see last year at the Texas game when someone held up a fake report card with all F's at PJ Tucker? That was good.

The USA chant wasn't really clever. I hate how politically correct people try to make things, but the USA chant just furthers how ignorant of a society the US is. I dunno, just somewhat tasteless, IMO.

I am not going after you, but just wondering what you think when the ISU fans chant "F*** the Hawkeyes" or whatever team we are playing? I think the USA chant would probably be more noticeable than random yelling.

I'm going to guess calling the US an "ignorant society" could be construed as insulting and tasteless as well my friend. Self-deprecation is one thing, but lets not tear down my country or society.

It's different when you're jeering at an entire team or fanbase. I mean, yeah, it's pretty derogatory when we do that to a rival, but it's not isolating any individual who doesn't deserve it. Maybe if Jiri made some hateful remarks about Americans... that'd be deserving. But not when he's just coming to the US for an education.

I'm not okay with elitism when it comes to other countries. This is what I mean by an ignorant society -- one who thinks they're the only country in the world that means something. It's one thing to be proud of our country, but it's another to use that pride to demean foreigners.

I personally don't believe that he came to the US for an education. The education is just something he has to do to be eligible for basketball, which is why he is here. That is just what I think anyway. I haven't talked to him but I doubt he remembers today what they said b/c he is too distracted by McD taking him behind the woodshed during practice today.

    Re: USA chant was clever

USA, in NE Iowa, is generally used as an abbreviation for U Suck ***. They chanted it at my high school games to opposing teams with all Iowans on their team. That's pretty much what I thought they meant.....

The one for Taylor was funny; the USA chant was ******** and showed no class. For Coleman we should have chanted "Take care of your baby."

    Re: USA chant was clever

I thought it was lame for 2 reasons:

    1. It was extremely lame. Chanting USA to a guy who isn't from America. Did they stay up all night thinking of that one?

    2. I'm pretty sure they've had a couple guys on their team before who weren't from America. Did anyone chant USA to them? I highly doubt it.

How are personal attacks better than chanting a countries names?

Both chants were fine, get over yourselves people.
