First Meeting with GC

I heard that some of the football players were concerned after the first meeting with our new head coach...

The first words out of his mouth... "When we are in a meeting you will sit up straight, look me in the eyes, and say, "Yes Sir" or "No Sir"...

Oh... Oh... discipline for our Cyclones!!!! Good Deal...

Wow. Old school football. No nicey nice buddy time.

Today, still wanted by BCS teams, he survives as a coach of fortune. If you have a problem - if no one else can help - and if you can find him- maybe you can hire: Gene Chizik.

Listen, this guy has coached some of the best talent in college football at Auburn and Texas over the last 4 or 5 years. With talent like that you can often times also get attitude. Not saying that doesn't happen at ISU, but these guys are football players after all and to keep them in line they need to know who is boss. A certain Berrymen could have used this lesson.

I think you hit it pretty right on.

To get some of the best talent in the nation, unfortunately you get some of the worst attitudes. With this you need discipline past what your mommy and daddy gave you.

Some learn, and then some dont!

It will be a nice change having GC around.

I love it. Good, old-fashioned, Southern respect. Growing up in Iowa, I was not raised to respond to my parents, teachers, coaches, etc. in a Yes Sir/Mam fashion. After living in Texas for 7 years I was impressed to see this type of thing still going strong. To me, showing respect is never out of style.

Hmmm this is interesting. JP hires McD in basketball, a no nonsense guy. He then hires Cael Sanderson for wrestling. I don't know him, but I would assume he's a no nonsense guy (I know I wouldn't talk back to a 4-time national champion that never lost in college). And now JP hires Chizik, a no nonsense guy. Does anyone else see a trend?

What's interesting is that 99.9% of Cyclone fans claimed that Mac was a strict disciplinarian when anyone with a brain knew it wasn't true.

Let's not beat up on Mac. I think every coach has his own style.

GC has already publicly stated he isn't here to be a friend of the players. He is here to be their coach. I think this thread shows this to be true. He is here to win and that is it.

I've heard pretty much the exact same story.

In general when one takes over a possition of authority it is a good idea to go a bit overboard on the discipline at the begining, because it is very difficult to toughen up once you've gone easy on people. It is then possible to let up a little if need be in the future and focus more on building relationships once people know who is in charge.

Exactly. First you break em and then you build em up! You find out who is willing to tough it out real quick. Those who can't handle it will be run off.

Change isnt easy, but the players will get used to it. Discipline is the foundation of great football teams. Not to bash our previous coaching staff, but we might have played more consistantly if we were better disciplined.
