Hawks suck

That's pretty much it.

The Rag has a poll for your favorite ISU-Iowa basketball moment. Right now the LaFester game leads with 64% followed by Fizer's "Eustachy #1" sign with about 18%. Iowa's NIT win is 3rd and the first game in many years is 4th.

My favorite moment is John Neal knocking down those two threes. The place was going nuts.

My second favorite is the game in '99 when Fizer got up on the scorer's table. Most of my favorite memories of that team are from later in the year plus I was way up in the balcony for that game.

I've only been to three of these games in person so I don't have a large selection to choose from. Anybody have any other good ones?

The John Neal game sticks out in my mind too because it is the freshest. Watching Haluska slop all over the floor last year was fun, too. Beating them in Carver-Hawkeye in 02-03 with Sullivan was also good.

Hell, it's always fun beating the Hawks.

To be truthful, as I think back on it, I can't think of a whole lot of ISU- Iowa games that were that huge. I can think of a lot of bigger wins and bigger games for Iowa State. The Lafester game is the only one that really sticks out above the rest, as that was an epic performance in a tight game. Other than that, I'll take the Kansas wins anytime.

Not only was the Lafester (54 pts.) game the best Iowa State vs. Iowa game I have ever seen, it is the best game I have ever seen in person ! It was a double overtime victory 102-100 by the Cyclones !

Yeah, beating the Hawks is fun, but, man, beating the Jayhawks in Fog Allen is TOPS!

This was a great game!! I also graduated on the day this game happened...I always said it was ISU's graduation gift to me!

I sat about 20 feet away from the ISU bench and you were not the only one yelling "don't shoot"...Johnny Orr was too! If I recall correctly, Lafester made a shot from about 1/2 court as the buzzer sounded for halftime. He was absolutely unconscious for the entire game!

One other quick tidbit...Jesse Jackson (who was running for President at the time) was in the crowd and was all over Lafester after the game trying to get his mug in the spotlight.

I also vividly remember a 76-72 win in the mid 80's (which may have been in overtime as well). I recall a couple of back door alley-oops to Terence Allen that sealed that one...Hilton was very loud that game.

I really liked beating AC Earl. With all of Hilton chanting AC, Ugly...AC, Ugly. And great signs that make TV like "call 1-800-HAIR-CUT"

The John Neal game was my favorite. I got a seat in the parquet behind the basket, in the corner of the Iowa locker room. I gave the players and coaches an earful that night... and I have a voice that carries, so I know they heard me :)

Also it was great seeing the guys show up in prison uniforms with the "Pierce, Pierre" signs around their necks.

C'mon Fred! When I was a freshman at ISU, you and I watched my all-time favorite Cyclone hoopster, Barry Stevens, lead ISU to victory over the Golden Gophers of Minnesota featuring future NBA'ers Trent Tucker and Randy Brewer. I'll never forget David Moss beating the 7'3" Brewer on the tip-off to begin the second over-time; Hilton was hopping that night! If the ISU / iowa game was #1 for you, this one had to be #1B!

As for the "Lafester game", that's the night I knew my girlfriend was to become my wife. I accompanied her to her work Xmas party at a Sushi restaurant rather than go downtown Chicago with my buds to watch the game. Back in those days, the only way to get game updates was to call an 800 telephone number from a payphone in the restaurant lobby! It was just killing me, but sixteen years of marriage and three kids later, I'm thinking I made the right decision!

My daughter was at a basketball camp with Acie's fifth grade daughter earlier this week. My wife came home from picking the daughter up and asked who he was! He's still not a handsome man...

Similar memory, I believe from 1983 or 1984. We arrived very early for an ISU / hawkeye game at Hilton to get prime balcony seats at mid-court. The place was pretty empty and EIU was doing their shoot-around. This kid from SEMCO named Mike ? walks up to the railing and yells in a voice that could be heard throughout, "Carfino, you suck!". Steve Carfino is mid-stroke from the top of the key and he stops and peers up at us with the funniest look on his face, which left us rolling. That set the tone for the day as our section rode him mercilessly in a fine ISU victory!
