Most successfull helmet in ISU history?....

After extensive research, I've found the yellow helmet with the red "I" with ISU down the middle was the most successful in our schools history. Earle Bruce used that helmet for three very successful seasons:
1976 8-3
1977 8-4
1978 8-4
Worst was Donnie Duncan...changed everything in 1979, then again in 1980 and 1981.
(check out Jeremy's Gallery at the top of the site, its great)

I have always liked that helmet, simple but recognizable. I remember going to an ISU game in 76 or 77 and seeing the clones down Utah State. Those were good years at ISU. I don't like the current helmet.

I know I may get burned for this a bit but I love our current logos and mascots more so than the older ones. Being in my mid 20's I'm sure if I was a bit older that opinion may be different, but I just feel something is missing from the older ones.

I actually dont mind the old cy that was running. don't know if that would look good on a helmet or even the old logo of the tordano looking red thing.

I like the new logo too but it seems trendy or more like a fad. I would like to see red helmets with a blue STATE on the side trimmed in gold with blue face masks.

Determining the most sucessful helmet

Would have to be done by looking a the number of head injuries sustained by the team in a season. For the most part ALL of our recent helmets have been sucessful.

Now if you are talking about wins, I am willing to bet NONE of our helmets have caused us to win or lose a single game. In fact, we could come out wearing helmets painted pink with ballet dancers on them for a logo and the helmets still would not impact our W/L record.

im more worried about getting good guys to wear the helmets than the helmets themselves

Re: Most successfull helmet in ISU history?....

Reading these constant discussions on uniforms and logos on this board makes me feel like I'm in the minority. I like the current logo and I like the football uniforms. From my perspective, I'm also in my mid 20's, the memories I have of the Clones before the current logo are being on the wrong end of blowouts and thinking that Iowa had a lifelong birth right to beat the Cyclones.

From what I have heard, the new logos, as well as the use of red and yellow instead of cardinal and gold has all been determined through marketing studies. The new logo sells to the 20-something fans who buy the majority of the licensed merchandise. The same thing is true of the red and yellow color scheme. Seeing as how ISU desperately needs to increase revenue and considering how businesslike big college athletics have become, I don't see any changes to anything ISU did in the past. I wouldn't rule out a change, but if one does occur, I see it being something completely new.

Re: Most successfull helmet in ISU history?....

I tend to agree. I'm a late-twenty something, and I began to RESPECT the cyclones when they changed to this logo (I was still a Hawkeye then). It's a "Pro-style" logo (look at the panthers, falcons, ravens, etc.). It also bridges the discrepancy between the cyclone nickname/cardinal mascot. I mean, really, what could be better than a cardinal so powerful that it leaves a cyclone in it's wake?

I think a lot of the current logo supporters have been silent because they know the new logo's not going anywhere. I'm sure if the whirlybird were as unpopular as some folks on this site wants us to believe it is it wouldn't have lasted the 12 years it has. I mean, look at the New York Islanders and the Gorton's fisherman logo. Personally, I liked that logo as well (own both jerseys), and it was gone after 3 years.

I also heard a rumor 5-7 years ago while I was still attending State that, while the university's official colors remain cardinal and gold, the athletic department adopted the midnight blue as an official color as well (making the official colors cardinal, gold, and midnight blue). I can't argue - when used sparingly (as in on the b-ball unis and in the whirlybird) it makes a good trim color.

Friley-Godfrey (-66|126)
Helser-Woodrow (-61|122)
Roberts-Harriman (-74|133)
Welch-Ayres (-73|133)
