Re: Alford is a goner !
We did give Dan 12 years without winning a conference title. Alford has a conference title and at least one tournament title, right?
I think it's clear that marriage will end eventually - seems neither partner is all that much in love with one another. I just think it's a year or two too soon for it to happen.

Re: Alford is a goner !
Come again?? How are you comparing McDermott, nine games into his ISU career, to Alford, nine YEARS into his career? Losing to Drake and UNI this year for McDermott is nowhere NEAR as bad as it is for Alford.

Re: Alford is a goner !
great for ISU, we got the crap kicked out of us by a BAD iowa team
Remember that stressed spelled backwards is desserts!

My point was a pair of games should not define a coach's career - especially in a season where teams play around 30 games.
I think everyone knew both big in-state schools would be down this year due to graduations, departures and a coaching change.

Re: Alford is a goner !
Anyone else hearing that Tyler Smith may transfer to Tennessee?
ISU Grad 1997.
ISU Fan for Life.
Not in CO anymore but I'm not changing my name :) -
Re: Alford is a goner !
Where is this rumor thread of Tyler Smith transferring? I can't find it on any site.

You guys don't get it....
Alford is not a great coach (even though the Hawks kicked a very thin ISU team this year), but he isn't horrible either. The main reason I would like to see him stick around is that the majority of Hawk fans I know hate him! He is a self-rightious pretty boy, and a complete *****, and he sure hasn't done enough at Iowa to overlook his behavior.
He seems to win enough games to keep getting raises, but not enough to take the Hawks to that next level they thought Tom Davis could not get them to.

Re: Alford is a goner !
I know for a FACT that Alford was going to get canned 2 seasons ago before they had that run the Big 10 tourney and wound up in the NCAA tourney because they finished the season strong. I have a friend that has ties with Iowa athletics (I don't feel comfortable going into detail but all I can say is they get a LOT of perks because if it) and was and still is very close to Bowlsby (Bowlsby offered this person a position in the athletics dept. at Stanford if that tells you how well-thought of this person is to Bob.) Anyways, apparently Alford has a clause in his contract that he can't be fired in a season that he makes the NCAA tourney. Bob was ready to pull the trigger on firing him after that season until the NCAA berth happened then his hands were tied.
The only reason why Alford got a contract extension is because it hurts your ability to recruit when you can't say you have a contract for at least 3-4 years the potential recruit will be there. Not all that money is garunteed in the extension either. I find it funny how they hired Alford because Dr. Tom couldn't take them to "the next level" and Alford has yet to even get the program back to the level that Dr. Tom left it at.

I've said the same thing about that season Iowa was laying an egg, yet won the Big 10 tournament and got the automatic NCAA bid. If that had not happened, I think he would have been gone that year or the next.

Let's look at this:
- Alford 9 yrs, Coach Mac 8 games
- Alford recruits from top to bottom, Coach Mac with 3 returning players and and a bunch of hurry up recruits after that yrs class had signed(even though I wouldn't trade one of them right now).
Why do you stick up for EIU whenever you get a chance?????

This is one of those things that I would love to reveal more details about how my source is connected to Iowa and Bowlsby to back up my comment but I just don't feel comfortable revealing too much. It's not a donor connection either. Just have to trust me on this one. My source still talks with Bob almost once a week and even though Bob is no longer at Iowa they still have the same connection to Iowa but probably not quite as personal with the new AD as they were with Bob.
Had I not had a wedding to be at the day of the ISU/Iowa game I would have been watching that game from one of the suites in the press box thanks to this person. -
