I personally still believe that Chizik is laying low on the recruits he is working on. There are two ways to handle things:
1. Make as big a splash with each recruit as possible
2. Quietly take care of business and announce a group coming in.
I hope it's number two here. There have been some signings announced, but just enough to satisfy our curosity it seems. And Coach C might not want others to know who's trail he is on.
Is my theory possible, or only wishful thinking?

Could he kidnap a few players from Texas, give them new identities and put them in Cardinal & Gold?
Someone check the NCAA rule book and see if they have a "new identity" clause...

Is my theory possible, or only wishful thinking? With Rivals & Scout there's no way Chizik is going to fly under the radar screen when it comes to recruiting. If Clark and/or Deace don't pick up on it, you can bet that the people working for Rivals & Scout at other schools will. All though, the way the Register covers recruiting, Chizik won't have a problem flying under the radar screen there with regard to recruiting.
I don't have a subscription to either Nebraska's Rivals or Scout's premium service, but i'm on both sites several times a day because you can get a feel for what's happening just from the teasers.

Let's hope Coach C has a productive Christmas season. I don't have a premium either, but try to follow things. Any assessments on recruiting progress so far?

To be honest, not much has been reported so far. In fact, nothing really - on top of what we already know.

Not true at all. Lucca Steiger, Charles Boozer, Wes Eichmeyer, Cory Macintosh and a bunch of other recruits from just basketball flew under the radar until they commited. Rivals and Scout know somethings more than us but with both of there track records on recruits comming to ISU I would say that Chizik can easily fly under with some of the recruits.

If I were Chizik, I would lay low. Release a few names early to show activity, then come out with his best recruitslater to show big time momemtum. Don't shoot the bullets too soon...I agree that may be what he is doing here.

I think again the point is rivals and scout calls up the kids and put their interests in the serrvice. How can you fly under the radar screen when the kid says he has been offered a scholarship by Clones? Plus, we are so late in recruitng that we have lost several of our jucos from McC staff and have to find other ones. They are accepting the scholarship and then making the visit in Jan tells me we are way behind and may have a somewhat empty cupboard. It would be wonderful to have the juco transfer in Jan so he could get with the team, but that will probably not happen much in Ames. Callahan is a truemaster of getting jucos to come in Jan. Ron Prince really raided the jucos last year. Unfortunately, we should have 15 or more recruits by now.

We've seen that Pollard works below the radar. No one knew the real Coach (many thought for sure they knew) until shortly before it was announced. Could it be that Chizik (Pollard's newest prized pupil) may work the same way? ...Pollard knew all along that he was the man...
PS: I REALLY hope this is the case, or we might be up sh*t creek!

So Westley, what is your speculation on what ISU will end up with. Can Coach C get back in the game..or is it simply too late?

Right now I don't think it has much to do with trying to be quiet but rather that the staff is just working like crazy to contact as many of the prospects as possible without letting too much time go by. Realistically we won't be getting studs for next year but they will be working on 08 and 09 recruits.
The way it is, we've been dead last in recruiting in the Big XII for a few years and we'll be that way next year. You really have to look at the time involved in getting recruits and then you'll see that the 09 class is really the first true test for the staff. I know that seems a ways off but that's the reality in a coaching change. GMac and crew have been incredible at basketball but that's not the norm.
If we can fill in with some JUCO's this coming year to try and plug the holes that we have, we could improve a win or two over this past year in my opinion and then we can try and build on that with the 08 and 09 classes. Next year's schedule ends up being a little tougher than this year in my opinion but I still think with the right system and the right JUCO's, we could possibly get a win or two that snuck by us this year.
Success helps recruiting and recruiting helps success. The tough part is trying to get one without having had the other. - Dang that works out to be a pretty good line:)

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. |

I still feel good about our future. Seems like several top line potential coaches wanted the ISU job, including Coach C, Harbaugh and Norvell. So they all must see at least the opportunity to suceede. Jeremy, How many recruits can we bring on board in your mind?

Great post Jeremy, you took the words out of my mouth completely. It is next to impossible for Chizik to pull out a recruiting class this late in the game that will move us up in recruiting classes. All we can hope is that the players he does find may be guys under the radar who can have an immediate impact.

I don't think the closet is near as bare as what it was when McCarney came to town. We have some good skill players in the pipeline. The O line is what needs the most work.
We shouldn't try to look at what Chizik is doing with too close a telescope. Indeed my impression of the guy is that he is more private about what's going on. You can look at that a couple different ways. It's certainly a change from what we're accustomed to, but I'm willing to give his style a try and see what happens.
Chizik is giving all the right answers. Let's just give him some time and breathing room.

I agree with Jeremy on this one. Rivals currently ranks us as 12th in the Big 12 so far this year. If GC can get this class ranked at 11th or better by signing day he will have done a good job.
I know we have to go the JUCO route this year, but we're starting behind there also - 66 of the top 100 on the Rivals list are already committed.
It wouldn't bother me if GC didn't fill all the 25 scholarships this year and left a few for JUCO transfers that could enroll next December. I think we will have to go pretty heavy JUCO again next year because many of our top skill players will be seniors.
