Student security officer arrested at ISU

DMR link

Ames, Ia. — An Iowa State University student security officer has been arrested and charged with burglary and theft.

ISU Police arrested Austin L. Meyers, 20, of 318 Welch Avenue, Tuesday, for charges relating to accusations that he stole instruments from Music Hall.

The theft was reported on Dec. 13, when someone said two musical instruments were missing from a storage locker in Music Hall.

Police said they believed that Meyer entered Music Hall at approximately 1 a.m. on Nov. 19.

Meyers had entered the building after it had been locked for the evening and closed to the public, police said. He then accessed the storage locker and stole the instruments, police said.

At the time of the burglary and the other thefts, Meyers was employed as a student security officer with the Iowa State University Department of Public Safety.

He has been charged with third-degree burglary, and second-degree theft, and fifth-degree theft.

You know, minimum security prison is no picnic. I had a client in there once. He said the trick is: kick someone's *** the first day, or become somebody's *****. Then everything will be alright.

Unbelievable! I know what he stole, too- two sets of marching drums. They disappeared one day, and some of the drumline members had a lot to answer for. It was the subject of a lot of grief for quite a while. I'm absolutely thrilled to see that he got caught! I hope he gets a harsh punishment for committing theft and burglary while employed by the police department. Make an example of the loser.

Hmm, we'll see what else turns up. Or maybe that's just what he's actually being charged with stealing, since that's what was reported? I know that was the date the drums disappeared...

At any rate, the principal of the matter remains: he was a security officer committing crimes. He deserves to be caught and harshly punished.

I'm just amazed that a student DPS officer had time to be stealing musical instruments. Shouldn't he have been plenty busy writing parking tickets? Throw the book at him!

Hope you guys have video surveillance there in the band storage area, might be able to clear it up. This guy was dumb enough to pawn the guitar in that same area, he's probably already done something stupid with the drums if he took them. They'll probably turn up.

Sounds like it was student security, not DPS.

BTW kids, pay your parking tickets off before you graduate - they withheld by diploma for $20. Talk about a gut wrenching week, I thought I bombed a final and was coming back, only to finally figure out my u-bill had a couple parking tickets on it.

No kidding, they were always busy following vehicles around on campus to wait for them to park so they could write a ticket when I was up there. Parking tickets were $15/each when I was up there....they gone up since then?

Same thing happened to me. But I totally forgot about it, and did not have to show anyone my diploma or transcripts until the bank wanted a copy when I was trying to buy a house later that year.

The scary thing is, all that work, and I have never ever, not even once, been asked for my transcripts.

I always got sick of hearing the "stupid DPS gives out too many parking tickets" arguments from everyone when I was at ISU. I mean they lay out the spaces where you can legally park, tell you what hours you can park, you park there during hours you shouldn't be, you get a ticket, then you complain about it. Does that make any sense at all?? I mean just because you hope really hard that they won't enforce rules that have been set doesn't mean that you're not going to get punished. Is it really that hard to park in the commuter lot?

Re: Student security officer arrested at ISU

the efficiency of DPS is crazy!, if you're in a spot for minutes you're getting a ticket. How about saving money by cutting a few meter maids? Save on fuel, pens, paper .... good times.

The parking situation sucked when I was there, I was in Friley a couple years and that was big motivation to move off campus.
