Where did I state that I was a better fan than anyone else? I do think in general Iowa fans are more arrogant than ISU fans. Part of this is due to their winning but I have found those that are most arrogant to be those that have very few ties to Iowa. They have an odd jahidic nature. I was in no way referencing anything about ISU in those comments.

I would have no idea how to rate fans as being better than others (game attendance, donations, etc ??) I did not say anything about rating fans and that being an alumni somehow made me better. Peter Taylor did not to go ISU. Why would I care? What I did say was that because I am an alumni of ISU it will always be a special place to me. This transcends athletics. For example, the best man in my wedding was my college roommate. My time at ISU had a big impact on who I am.

I would think everyone would hold their alma mater in high regards.

All I lknow is I am glad I am a 'Clone fan nad not a Hawk fan. I hear enough Squawking at the house when I watch football I don't need to be a Hawk fan to exploit that and be known as a Squawker.

    A LOSING record.

    And that's a Good Thing(tm)

BTW - I love Deace's show, and agree with him on all his political/religious opinions, but my from my limited contact with him, I don't think I could stand him, personally.

So Jon, why did you not go to Iowa? Did you go to Southern Illinois for a certain major? I am an alumn of ISU. Iowa State and Ames will always be special to me because I went to school there. Do you have any ties or allegiance back to you SIU? Do you follow them at all or have you thrown your college years away to be a typical Hawk?
My folks moved from West Branch to near Peoria, IL in March of my junior year of HS...so I went with them. While finishing HS in ILL, I looked into Iowa, but was already quite familiar with SIU and Illinois State, because of knowing that I wanted to get into radio and TV since I was 13...their programs were superior to Iowa's at the time, and among the best in the country, at the time.

I also knew that I had to borrow my way through school, and out of state tuition at Iowa was just too much....AND SIU's R/T program was superior. So I went to SIU for those reasons.

I still follow SIU's BB team, as far as looking at the box scores and hoping they do well. They play UNI this weekend, and I really won't be upset if they win or lose because I like UNI's program...

What going to SIU did for me, from a sporting sense, is to instill a great respect for the Valley in hoops, and a fondness for watching their games. I love Valley hoops, and enjoy talking about Valley hoops...which helps out this time of year, to be sure.

As for being labeled a 'typical hawk fan', I can live with that.

This seems to be the big difference in Iowa and ISU fans. A higher percentage of Cyclones, including myself, went to or are going to school here at Iowa State. This creates a unique bond to the university since the college experience, especially at ISU, is so unique. They typical Hawk fan sees their team kind of how people look at pro teams. One day they proclaim themselves fans and there ya go, which always means they can jump on and off the bandwagon.

I am not just a fan of Cyclone Football or Cyclone Basketball, I am a fan of Iowa State University! and everything it represents

Re: Deace - Like him or not?

I agree that there are a lot of people who just pick a team and go with it...but why is that so bad?

So if someone didn't go to Iowa or Iowa State, they can't be a diehard fan? That's bull IMO. There are a helluva lot more colleges and universities in this state beside Iowa and Iowa State. But if you choose to go to William Penn, Grandview, etc., why should that stop you from loving Iowa State or Iowa athletics. Makes no sense to me.

Like MP said, same goes for the Bears. When I was little, my parents got me one of the little kid Bears uniforms with the helmet and they have been my favorite team ever since.
