If this rule had been in effect during the football season, does that mean the Missouri football coach couldn't have cry-baby whined for 2 weeks about the holding call against ISU...and the Big 12 office also could have made no comment about the play.

I believe that to be correct. And I also think the rule stemmed from the public mess Missouri created.
Did the DM Rag get this via a press release from the Big 12 office or did they go trolling for this, trying to stir something up?
I think McDermott is way in the clear on this, even to the small minds at the Big 12. Hannah, though, might get his wrist slapped for his comments. He probably isn't going to get too many favorable calls from the officials for a while.
I know many of us fans think the Rag is biased against us, but I'm starting to just think their sports reporters just aren't very bright.
Reading the intro to the article - it seems the Big 12 is actually reviewing the comments...
Big 12 Conference officials are reviewing postgame comments made by Iowa State men's basketball coach Greg McDermott and Missouri guard Stefhon Hannah after the Cyclones' win Saturday against the Tigers.
The league is reviewing comments in the wake of a new Big 12 gag rule that went into effect Jan. 1. The new rule says players cannot comment - favorably, unfavorably or even in generalities - about officiating.
I have a question - assuming he broke some kind of rule, what would the punishment be? Since it's not an NCAA rule, nothing too bad could happen could it?
Sure, the coach can deny it. As long as he/she is not on record commenting about the officials - the coach is safe. Let the media report what they want.
While I think the rule is crap - it is a rule. Cite the rule when asked about the men in stripes and be done with it. It's quite simple.
A concept the folks at Missouri most likely won't be able to grasp and understand.
You can let the media report what they want, but when they paint you ina bad light and you can't defend yourself, that is tough.
My take after hearing GMac's comments in that we have one hell of a coach that is heads up when dealing with game situations. We've found our winning coach for the next 20 years.
Clone to the Bone with the up and coming IOWA STATE.
