Coaching move of the game...

ESPN.com recap link

The Jayhawks opened the second half on a 12-3 run and took a six-point lead. Robinson's 3-point play put Kansas ahead, and Kaun and Wright added baskets in the paint that pushed the Jayhawks' lead to 39-33.

Taylor answered back for the Cyclones, hitting three 3-pointers and a layup to put the Cyclones ahead 51-48. Self put Rush on Taylor shortly thereafter, and Taylor went without a field goal the rest of the way.

"It was a good move by coach Self to switch it up and give Mike a different look," McDermott said. "Baskets were hard to come by."
This is not to say we got out-coached today. Coaching is one of the biggest reasons we have 2 early conference wins and took Kansas to OT.

I just wanted to take a moment to recognize a move that likely changed the outcome of the game. Taylor was doing well today and hit a couple shots in the 2nd half that really lifted the team.

I didn't notice the change during the game at Hilton yet noticed it in the recap.

Gotta tip the hat to Bill Self for making a smart adjustment that kept Mike scoreless after the change.

Re: Coaching move of the game...

I DID IN FACT notice it during the game and the announcers made mention of it a couple of times. It also appeared to me that Mike got a little winded towards the end of the game too. So between the switch and getting tired. Mike was not real sharp towards the end. Yes, it was a good coaching move.

I noticed it, too. Rush blocked a jumper by Mike on one of the first possessions after the switch.

Re: Coaching move of the game...

You have to hand it to Self. He's still a terrible in-game coach though.

Re: Coaching move of the game...

We need to realize that Kansas has the talent to make those changes. They have 4-5 future NBA players on their roster. The fact that we hung with them and had a real chance to win the game if a testament to Coach Mac. I think we still have a great shot at going 8-8 in the league and make a deep run in the NIT. I also predict we go pretty deep in the Big 12 Tourney.

If we finish 8-8 and win 3 games in the tourney, that's 20 wins if my math is correct. We may not be looking at the NIT but something a little better.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.
