The Future is Now!

I have read around here a few times of members commenting on the success of the coaching hires. Obviously many fans are excited to see potentionally great coaches step foot on the campus of ISU, but most are still left unproven. Its takes wins to show how great of a coach you really are. Its not always the heart, the name, or the desire that can make a difference on the resume to show your ability.

So of course to judge JP's coaching hires, it will take time as we see how their future seasons pan out. But in my mind there are two levels of product satisfaction.

When heading out to a store, you spot something that you have craved for a long time. This could be some tool or home appliance that is very costly, but could be very useful in the future. You knew the time would come when you would have to throw down the big bucks to be able to afford something of this nature, but was alwasy leary of the practicality of such a purchase. Unfortunately you have waited long enough and the time is now to purchase such an item.

The first level is of course the buyers rumorse. Now, if you feel good about the purchase, you keep reassuring yourself that it was the right move, and soon began to see the benifits of the product. But if you feel a wrong decision was made, you began to feel regret and may try to return the item go back to your old ways with the outdated appliance that you already had.

In time you will began to actually see the real advantage of the product and will know if you got your money's worth. Here is where the agony and displeasure of the old item is replaced with satisfaction of the new. Life sometimes may become easire because of it, which helps with success of other situations around the home. You began to feel that your money was well spent, and feel good about the decision you made.

To now compare this theory to the coaching hires of ISU, I think many of us can say at this time that we have the right guys. Coach McD and Mr. Sanderson are two examples to prove this.

Sanderson has proven himself as an athlete, but not as a coach. He has the credibility as a wresteler and I am sure any kid would love the opprotunity to learn from such an icon for the sport. And because of his recent success with the team at Midlands, and the national rank of the program itself; I would say this is no way remorse of giving this kid a shot at coaching this team. I could sit there and stare with a smile on my face saying this guy is good, and I am sure glad we got him.

McD is the same way. He has coached and has proven himself on every level. But D1A basketball in the Big XII is completely different in a lot of ways. But he has pulled through. The team is still young, and to really know the potential is hard to predict at this time. But with what has been displayed out on the court, and on the recruiting front; this again is a purchase that I have no remorse.

There is still some time to really really know if these guys will pan out as we all hope they will. But there is every reason for every fan to get excited about the success of ISU Athletics now. In my book, these guys have already shown that JP got his money's worth and will continue to do so in years to come.

Expect the football team to win 6 or 7 games including the Iowa game and go to a minor bowl. I know physically we will be in better condition.

EIU is the other Okoboji University for serious students and home of Captain Kirk who pilots the Enterprise on its Trek through the Universe for finding his next great job. Captain, beware of your Superbowl.

Re: The Future is Now!

I'm still leary on everyone's high expectations for the FB team. I really think expecting a winning season in Chizik's first year is quite a stretch. Don't get me wrong I would love to see it happen but I think we've been spoiled with McDerrmott's early success so far and think this means the FB hire will have immediate results as well. Building a FB team is much more difficult than a basketball team and let's face it, the talent coming back from last year did not do too hot and we lost quite a few impact players on both sides of the ball.

Cael already had a good foundation of wrestler's and a great recruiting class coming in, McDerrmott had some decent talent that stayed and did a great job in the late recruiting phase but landing B-Ball players that can come in and contribute right away and adding several FB players that can is not quite as easy. The topic has been discussed before, you can turn a b-ball team around quick with a couple good players as long as you have good role players and depth around them. In FB you need several good players and several more above average players around them in order to put a good team together that can win as just a couple weaknesses can be exposed quickly against good teams. Take last year, we had talent at WR and QB and probably an average backfield but the O-Line was terrible and was exposed often. On defense we had many holes but some very talented players at certain positions. You have to have talent across the board in FB to play against the best.

Again, this is no knock on Chizik but I've seen predictions as high as 9 wins here and many 6-8 win predictions. Hope you all aren't disappointed because those are pretty lofty expectations for this program at the moment. I think by year 3 when Chizik has his players and system in place, you will see the difference but not many 1 year coaches take over a program like ISU and turn it around overnight into a bowl-bound team.

Re: The Future is Now!

Travman I agree and that is exactly why I didn't comment on Chizik at all. It is way, way to early to tell how his success will be here at ISU. Heck we haven't even seen a spring game that would tell us how he will coach this team. So for now I look at this hire as a lay-away item. Could be a good buy once the product gets home, but until then, it stays on the shelf.
