hahaha i love it
haha i was over at http://www.phogblog.com/ just looking at what they had to say about the game, and it kills me how suprised they were, but i have to say, as much as i cant stand kansas fans, a few are giving iowa state alot of respect..key word(s) "a few"
sorry if all of this has been posted..i was at drill all weekend and i didnt even watch the game until like 5 on sunday, then went to bed.. so ya..
Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative. ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other." -

C'mon folks realize that if the team is underachieving on the floor and there isn't much to cheer about then there is no Magic to be had, but one year of disappointing loss after disappointing loss does not mean that the Magic has been gone since Orr was here. Think back to the KU games against the turncoat Iowans, or the Iowa game when Fizer pronounce Larry the best coach in the state, or numerous other games over the past 5 years. Celebrate it and be glad that you get to experience it b/c of what our AD has done to bring the right coach in for our program.
And on a side note. Cyclone Alley needs to get someone in there with a nice big sign that says nothing more than "Hilton Magic."
Needed to get that off my chest hope I didn't Pi** any of you off. The "magic" back in the mid 80s was about a rabid fan base in a sold out venue doing everything it could by way of cheering and support to encourage our team to play at a higher level. Not waiting for a team and coach to play at a level that warranted tremendous support. We cheered for our team and screamed at our opponents no matter what the caliber of our team or our opponent was.
I believe if you look back at those teams of the mid 80s and you examine their records you will find that they were two different teams...one with a great home record and one with a poor road record. To me, this is evidence of the "magic" the crowd brought...helping a team perform better than maybe even they themselves thought they could.
If we have to rely on signs that say "Hilton Magic" to prove it is there...then it probably isn't.
I just don't understand why attendance is only averaging around 11,000 and not the 13,000+ average we had "back in the day".
PS: No weather excuses please...we did have snow and ice back in the mid 80s.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -
Re: KU Fans Reason to Bash Hilton and ISU Fan
I'm not making excuses but the reality is that there's a ton more things to pull people away from just going to ISU games than there was back then. The main thing being youth sports have exploded and parents are having to spend their weekends driving around and watching basketball/volleyball/soccer/whatever tournaments instead of getting the family together to go watch the ISU game. It's also much easier for today's students to go home for the weekend than it was back in the 80's. Higher speed limits, more reliable cars, cheaper airfare...I think it's stupid to have to go "home" every weekend but it's a whole lot easy for that "homebody" to do it now if they want to.

I have a friend that I used to sit by at games that can't go to Saturday games any more because of all his kids activities. I think having those early season games on SUndays was a great idea.

Winning is everything as they say. And what did you do for me today? You say you raised the ticket prices so we can become winners again. Just great.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
Re: KU Fans Reason to Bash Hilton and ISU Fan
A KU fan just called in to one of the KC sports stations to talk about the Mizzou game but took time at the end to say he was in Ames on Saturday and was impressed with how loud it was. Said the fan support was great and that McD was really going to have ISU going soon.
The hosts then talked a little bit about ISU being the surprise of the Big 12 so far and how well coached they look.

Re: KU Fans Reason to Bash Hilton and ISU Fan
Maybe the KU fans were confused with the UUUUUUU for Jiri and thought those were always boo's. I was also suprised and embarassed that the only sections not full were the student balcony sections. As a recent grad in May '06 I cannot imagine anything that would be more important, including hangover sleep,to do on a Saturday afternoon. It was the first week of classes so studying is not a viable excuse either!

Re: KU Fans Reason to Bash Hilton and ISU Fan
A) I'm not going to apologize for booing at a bad call. There were a decent number of them saturday, and maybe a few times we were booing at proper calls, but generally it seemed like we were getting jobbed. The refs make bad calls, they're going to hear it from the crowd. Those KU d-bags should can it, because I would bet they tend to do the same. B) This Hilton Magic argument is pointless. We saw it saturday, we saw it occasionally during the Morgan era (KU, UT in 04; OU and TT in 05), and we're going to see a hell of a lot more of it under McDermott. Let's be thankfull for the way this team has improved, and keep up the support. While I have been disappointed by my fellow students, I think this hard nosed play will keep bringing in more fans.

It seemed the ref had a choice between two possible calls. A clean block, ISU ball out of bounds, or a foul and Taylor is shooting free throws. Instead KU got the ball.

If you're talking about the play I think you are--then the slow-mo replay on ESPN showed very clearly that the ball was NOT touched by KU, NOR was there a foul. Sorry--MT airballed it all on his own.

Those seats are for students who aren't members of Cyclone Alley, and there are very few students who buy tickets but aren't in the Alley. Not to mention- how would a student who didn't buy season tickets get a KU ticket? I know a few who tried and could not; they had to look for a reseller on campus.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

Re: KU Fans Reason to Bash Hilton and ISU Fan
All this talk of whether or not Hilton Magic is back put the nostalgia machine in motion. "Real Hilton Magic" was when the Okie State player at the line in a game winning situation couldn't hit the free throws because the floor was vibrating from the noise level. It was the UI-ISU "Lafester" game when the players didn't run out during the introductions because they couldn't hear the PA announcer. It was Jeff Hornacek's no-look behind the back pass for a wide open shot. Hilton Magic has never been dead and gone entirely, but it looks like GMD will have it back at full strength very soon. -
Re: KU Fans Reason to Bash Hilton and ISU Fan
I would say it made a strong case for itself on Saturday.
Boom.....transfer the karma -

No one was ripping on precious Cyclone Alley. The poster was saying it's crap that the students who bought those seats (and they were sold) didn't show up for the game. We need the "general" student population to get up off their butts and fill the place up, unfortunately this has hardly ever happened.
