Best Sports Comedy Ever?

Since it’s a slow news day for ISU sports (while we're waiting for recruit info to roll in), I thought it might be fun to start a thread asking everyone what you think the funniest sports movie ever is. I tried to think of all of the funny sports movies I could – I can add to the list if anyone can think of anything that deserves a spot in the polls. I was going to do this as a blog, but you can’t put polls there – hope it’s okay w/everyone to put it here in Off-Topic.

The Candidates:

Bull Durham – Despite the fact that Kevin Costner kinda sucks these days, a wonderful film. Pretty common consensus as one of the top 5 best sports movies, but is it your pick for funniest?

Caddyshack – Chevy Chase. Rodney Dangerfield. Bill Murray. Bill Murray’s brother (who is in all of Bill’s movies). Classic lines, and a sweet Kenny Loggins soundtrack.

A League of Their Own – A personal favorite, and baseball is even my least favorite sport of the big three! “Avoid the clap, Jimmy Dugan” – Tom Hanks is just awesome in this. When he throws the baseball glove at Stillwell’s face, I laugh every single time. Even Rosie O’Donnell can’t screw this up.

Best In Show – Yeah, it’s about dog shows. I personally don’t consider that a sport, but a lot of people (including the programmers at ESPN once upon a time) apparently do. Whether it’s a sport or not, it is hilarious. Makes every dog owner out there feel 1000x more normal.

Bad News Bears – I’m going to qualify this and specify that I mean the Walter Matthau version here. You know, the funny one. And just the first one – not the one where they go to Japan, or any of that. Why is it so entertaining to watch little kids swear? Maybe I’m not meant to be a parent…

Jerry Maguire – Maybe not technically about sports so much as a sports agent, but has some awesome cameos. I can’t think of another movie that has more sports star cameos in it. One of Tom Cruise’s finer performances – back from when he wasn’t crazy.

Slap Shot – I’ve personally never seen this one, but can only imagine that hearing Paul Newman drop f-bombs and beat people up has to be good watching.

White Men Can’t Jump – I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this film. I think I can now name all foods that start with the letter “q”. The trash talk in this movie is priceless – I watched it with my grandmother once, though, which made the profanity usage count a little awkward…

The Sandlot – How can you not love this movie?? It’s so cute!! Best exchange:
Phillips: “Tomorrow, noon, at our field. Be there, buffalo-butt breath.”
Ham: “Count on it, pee-drinking cr**-face!”

Major League – Wild Thing! There are way too many funny scenes. Bob Uecker is just hilarious, and there are so many great lines (“How’s your wife and my kids?”). May not have won any Oscars, but too funny.

Teen Wolf – I am putting this on here to amuse myself. However – who didn’t want to pull a Styles on the top of a friend’s van?

BaseKetball – This one may compete with Jerry Maguire for cameos. It really is in a league of its own (not the Madonna kind). Final sequence is perfect.

Happy Gilmore – The only movie where you can witness Bob Barker beating the cr** out of someone. “The price is wrong, b****.” Absolutely beautiful.


(Dis)Honorable Mentions: Space Jam, Slam Dunk Ernest, Air Bud, Mighty Ducks, Ladybugs

No doubt this vote should only come down to Major League, Slapshot, and Caddyshack!!! I can't choose.

Madona and Rosie = Horrible.

If that movie did not have Tom Hanks and Jon Lovite it would be the worst movie ever made. Right up there with Gigli

I have to admit that I just fast-forward through anything that doesn't have those two in it. I'm not a fan of most of the women (Geena Davis has kind of a horse-face, at the risk of sounding awful). I do like that a young Tea Leone (sp?) is in it.

So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

I really feel a little bad putting it as a "(Dis)Honorable Mention" - I honestly have never seen the movie. Nor Air Bud. :baffled5wh:

Well, when I was in 5th grade and still infatuated with Michael Jordan, and still young enough for cute cartoons, it was the bomb.

Some of the songs that made me cooler because they were on the soundtrack that i had:
Space Jam (obvioiusly)
I believe I can fly
Fly like an Eagle
Basketball Jones

Grandma: Sir, can I trouble you for a warm glass of milk? It helps me go to sleep.

I would rank my favorites from this list:
Caddyshack
Slap Shot
Happy Gilmore
White Men Can't Jump
Teen Wolf (come on, even the stuff they didn't mean to be funny is hilarious)
Baseketball
Major League
The Sandlot

You can't really go wrong with any of those.

I liked Best in Show but I wouldn't consider it a sports movie.
