Re: Quit Voting, Our Student Spirit Sucks

There are 3000 cyclone alley members... first... I don't believe they are allocated seats all the way to the top on both sides. Maybe I'm wrong. Second... It used to be where they were only on one side. So that side had all the stand up and yell people on one side... then the other side had no voice to them. Now both sides have Cyclone Alley and are loud near the court... and I think the quietier people sit at the top. But everyone is being part of Cyclone alley regardless if they cheer loud or not because it's the thing to do. I don't know if it's really any different than it was in the past.

I have lost my voice at every single basketball and football game for the past 2 years. Now with that being said I know you are all talking about the other students that come and do nothing or don't even show up. But what I can't stand is we yell, scream, jump and yell somemore for the whole game (minus timeouts) and the rest of the crowd only yells and claps at the beginning of each half or when we get some great plays. What gives?!? Everyone should be standing at least for the final 3-5 minutes to help our guys out. Instead most just sit and watch or some leave.

Now there are a few guys and girls who do stand and clap and cheer , but I recon they are told to sit down becasue the person behind them can't see. We need get the WHOLE crowd back into the game regardless of how our guys our playing. They feed of of the crowd and if there is nothing there well... Some where I read the idea of getting shirts that said something like "Can't see? Stand up!"

    Ok I'm done venting now

P.S. Like President Bush said " Don't like my plan, fine let me hear yours!"

I'm going to respectfully disagree with part of what you said out of pride. I always stood on the other side from Cyclone Alley (partially to attempt to bring some balance to the sides, as you pointed out, but partially because when you happen to share a name with a player, you want to wear his jersey, not the CA shirt), even though I've always been a member.

CA membership is inflated because now membership is almost compulsory. If you want to be anywhere but the balcony, you HAVE to be a member of CA. Personally, I'd prefer it if membership was only required for arena circle and parquet seating, but the balcony is open to all students or alumni, whoever wants to buy the ticket. But then again, I'm also in favor of removing all the chairs from the arena circle section of CA so people HAVE to stand...

Finally, something we can agree on. I stand every time, but I know there are a lot of people who don't. It is almost unpatriotic, like a crime against your country or something.

Well said. When I was in school I too was in CA but sat on the opposite ends for the reasons that you listed. I coach hs bball and was normally coming straight from practice so it was also easier to get a seat on the court at that end because you didn't have to beat most of the die hards in CA as well as the CA officers. I love the idea of CA and I was a member every year that I was in school. However, I think that having both lower ends completely CA kind of kills the rest of the student section, especially if they're capping it at 3000. At least the other way the non-CA students had a chance to sit down low if they got there early enough. I know it's a lame excuse for them, but I honestly think that the normal non-CA student is not real pumped to show up for a lot of "non-KU/Iowa" games when they know they are going to have to sit in the balcony. It might be a dumb idea, but if there was at least 1 parquet section on each end that the normal students could sit in it maybe it would help. You could get more regular students there early trying to get those seats, and then hope that even the ones who didn't get there in time would stay and sit in the balcony sections. If CA members got there first, they could obviously just take the seats too. I know most are probably thinking "if you want to sit in the lower level just buy a CA membership", and I would agree, but I'm sure there are several factors to why they don't (not to mention it's capped at 3,000, which I would think is pretty close to the number of lower level seats that we have, meaning that we need almost every CA member at every game to fill it). Just a couple thoughts I've had while surveying the scattered few students sitting in the upper deck from my perch in the corner.

Oh I completely agree with you, when orriginally typing this out... I had something to the extent of the "first couple of rows on the opposite side made noise" and "some of those people were even part of Cyclone Alley but wanted to get front row seating" But couldn't word it right so I just deleted those sentences. But for the most part... Cyclone Alley was really loud, and the other side not as much... hence they decided to make both Sides Cyclone Alley.

And I agree... it is practically compulsary if you want to get good seats you need to join Cyclone Alley. I had many friends who disliked them removing the regular student section from one side. It discourages people from coming up with orriginal costumes because you are required to wear the shirt (that you also have to make sure is washed even when women's and mens games so close to eachother makes it tough)

And lastly... if the loud Cyclone Alley fans had as much pride as I know you do... (seeing you at all athletic games, not just basketball and football)... we'd have the best student section in the nation.

My whole post was just to defend the students and say that just because the top of Cyclone Ally wasn't loud and what not (which I didn't see because I was at the bottom) I just think that the same percentage of students were the same way two years ago.

Re: Quit Voting, Our Student Spirit Sucks

I for one wouldn't mind removing chairs, but then people would just sit on the risers.

However, if you just try and pack everyone into the lower section you may be able to sell more tickets to alumni.

Probably not going to happen, but that is my logic.

And for the record, I tried very hard to get rid of my roommate's ticket prior to the game just so someone would be there to take his place. But unfortunately, I couldn't find anyone on late notice to take it. :(

I think next time we should just go around the lower ring of the Colesium and try and get the front row to stand up and then making everyone behind them stand up. Once again, not likely.

In regards to CA, maybe we should just get someone to organize some cheers and write them on a white board to just make them up as they go. Could also use it to communicate with the students on the opposite side.

Thanks for the support. It's nice to know not everyone thinks I'm just a psychotic idiot. I've got two more opportunities to support this year. Jan. 31 at College Station and Feb. 10 at Austin. I plan on getting some hometown fans ****** at me, yelling like hell, and seeing other stadiums. It's gonna be great.

I've got one more year to bleed as a student. It's going to be one hell of a ride.

There are times when we are down 7-9 points and K-State has the ball and I'm thinking to myself, this place should be loud as hell right now but it wasn't. It's tough to explain but Hilton magic isn't what it once was for some reason.
I have not been in Hilton for a game in some time.

I was a student from 83-87. I was there when what we now call "Hilton Magic" was real but had not been named. I was there when we cheered loud for our team when they came onto the court but we cheered louder when our coach came out with fists-a-pumpin'. I was there when we averaged near or at capacity for attendance. I was there when halftime always included a rousing "HI ED!" shouted to Ed Gagnier as he emceed the Shoot 5 for 5 contest. I was there when we cheered for our team no matter the opponent or the score to help motivate them to perform at a higher level. I was there when we made opponents scared with floor shaking noise and any coach that stood too much was pelted with jeers of "sit down (insert coach's name)!". I was there when many teams of superior talent came to Ames and left with tails between legs (can you say Danny Manning and KU 0-4!)

If the current crowd is waiting for the team to give them something to cheer about then I think any "magic" has certainly waned. Maybe this is just the result of the success and stature that Johnny Orr brought to the program. When I was in school, having a competitive and exciting team was a relatively new thing. We cheered like crazy whether we were playing Florida International or Oklahoma...whether we were up by 10 or down by 10. Maybe our fan base has become spoiled or jaded by success. Maybe people just don't have the same passion. I don't know.

But it is disappointing to hear this. I have a son in HS and we are planning a trip to ISU to take in a game next year. I hope he won't be disappointed when he compares his own experience to the stories I have told him about the best college basketball atmosphere in America!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I miss good old Norm Stewart just for that reason. "Sit Down Norm!"

Also can't forget yelling "Give'm He** Johnny!" whenever Johnny got into a ref's face.

Re: Quit Voting, Our Student Spirit Sucks

Maybe I'm wrong... but I think people like to think when they were going to school here... they were the best cheerers. I first became a Cyclone fan when I began School here 3 and a half years ago because I'm from MN, so I can't compare which years were historically the best... but I've payed attention to see what various people say about the years they went to school hear and the atmosphere/players of that time, and I figure out the approximate time they are talking about. And not calling anyone out in this thread... but from the dates that I put together from posters of this site from post since the site started... most people think that the years they were here were the best... and I think people's perspective change too... my roommate is from Ames and he talks about how things just awed him when he was little going to games... I think things just seem different when you get older... but do they really change that much??? I am lucky to get extremely good seating and the atmosphere seems amazing to me. Yes if I look up at the end of the games (football and basketball) when the score is lopsided... I see fans leaving early to beat traffic, I always see non-students leave early (I assume because they are the ones who need to drive to games and getting home at a good time is important to them) Maybe students are leaving too... but I don't look up behind me much because I'd rather watch the game... anyway... my point is that I have a feeling that the atmosphere is the same as it was in the past... maybe I'm wrong... but I think your son will have a great experience here Cyclone #1.
