I am also not an Alumn. I did attend for a few years but didn't graduate from ISU. Does that make me a lesser fan?

Hell.....
.... I did'nt graduate there either and have been in NYC , basically since 1989 when I left ISU.... this is the first year I'm going to buy season (2x350) tickets and I still live in NYC... 19 years later and I did'nt graduate... I bleed Cardinal and Gold though since 1976 ISU vs. Nebraska when I was a very young man....

My is point that of all the people that I know WELL that are Hawk fans (probably 30+) , I know a total of one that attended the U of I. The kicker is he dropped out! (I still give him credit though)
This is drastically different for the ISU fans that I know.
Either way, it's my favorite joke of all time so I'm putting it on a freakin shirt!

I love the joke...what it means to me is that the college sports coverage in Iowa is so severely slanted, that Tom and Tina Trailerpark have little chance to be Cyclone fans. It's nearly impossible. You have to work your butt off in most parts of Iowa. Buy ESPN Full Court to get a basketball game. Sit on your roof with a transitor radio and a 23-foot tin-foil antenna to get the games on radio. Spend hours online to get a shred of Cyclone news.
For those of you who are Clone fans and didn't go to ISU...I LOVE YOU. But there aren't enough of you out there!

If one-of-every-10 living alumni joined the National Cyclone Club at the minimum level of $100, we could finance $30 million worth of construction." Jamie Pollard |

2 out of 8 of my group are alum. We donate over $2500 a year. I went to 10 out of 12 games last year. I'm not wanted?

Perhaps it is funniest to the alums. I will not speculate as to why. But...I'm sure all alums appreciate ALL ISU fans.

Well, you can't get into the University of Iowa with a 3rd grade education...

I am an eastern iowa guy who always have lived in hawk "territory" growing up and was always amazed how close-knit the ISU fanbase was around Ames/DM area of central iowa...I go to UNI and live in Cedar Falls, and I am an ISU season ticket holder. I believe all it takes for your fanbase to grow outside of your main one is to win. Within the state of iowa when the hawks had their 15 game winning streak against ISU, that's when many of the people who normally didn't follow sports chose to root for iowa (and like the t-shirt says, most of them never have been on iowa's campus)...I also noticed that when ISU had their 5 game winning streak against iowa, that their fanbase seemed to grow outside of Central Iowa...It was good to see bigger #'s at the games and I welcome the people like myself who don't attend or didn't attend ISU who are ISU fans. I like to root for the Panthers as well, but the Cyclones are my #1. I believe all it takes to bring in more people w/o ISU connections in to the fan base - is to win. If iowa isn't a winning program i know many "hawk" fans i grew up around who would stop following them. I don't necessarily like it when people are fairweather fans, but since iowa has a lot of them who never went to iowa, i will embrace them if they wanna cheer on State! But overall I definitely see many more people wearing ISU apparrel, ISU flags, ISU mailboxes, etc. here in eastern iowa and DEFINITELY in cedar falls and cedar rapids than b4.

How will ISU get non-alum fans in the fold when folks read crap like this. We should accept any fan that wants to be a Clone regardless of education level. Heck, we build the fan base when we see kids in elementary/junior high/high school decked out in Clone gear. Are they alums? Should we deny their pride? Can we afford to do that as a base?

I graduated from Central College, but have rooted for Iowa State since I was 4. Does that make me less of a fan?
To me, the whole "you don't count or you're pathetic because you root for school X but didn't go there" argument is weak. In a way it makes the people who say it sound jealous of Iowa and desperate to find anything to talk smack about.
Iowa doesn't have a pro team, so most Iowans root for either Iowa or Iowa State. There's nothing wrong with that. It's more about being proud of living in this state and rooting for the hometown team, which to most Iowans is the Iowa Hawkeyes. Whether you like it or not, it'll probably always be that way.

I didn't intend for this post to become a pity party for non-alums.
Yes, you are all worthy fans and all alumni are glad to have anyone become a Cyclone.
It's taking a cheap shot at our biggest rival so I don't see what the beef is. It may be hypocritical to a certain extent, but it's more true than it is false. Every college football fan in this state knows it.

Everyone -- make sure there's no "Herky has Herpes" chant this year for the Iowa/Iowa State game.
Afterall, we don't want to offend anyone with herpes.

I think it's not something to be ashamed about to have fans that aren't alumnus, but more of something to be proud about.
