I have no idea where I would rank coaches. In my mind so many other factors have to do with how a coach gets recruits...(miami seems much more attractive than ames/facilities - which hopefully we will be improving on).
From what I have seen coach Mac and his staff do a good job developing talent...which is why I can have faith that we won't be terrible in the future (zero 4 or 5 star recruits this year but i guess thats a whole different debate).

Credits: 212,458 Year: 1991 Degree: Ag Business/Marketing NFL: Vikings | I hate giving any pukeye anything any credit, but Ferentz is one hell of a coach. I can't wait until the NFL gets him so EIU can hire another red headed stepchild for a coach like Alfraud. But Ferentz is only 2-5 against Iowa State. The first year that McCarney beat Iowa, Hayden Fry was still coach.

Credits: 209,382 | It's tough to rank Hawkins as the 17th best without coaching a game at his new school IMO.
Also, I would never put Callahan or Morriss ahead of Dan. It's easier to recruit to both of those places. Callahan has done nothing yet at Nebraska with the talent he has brought in. Baylor is a place with some tradition going back to the SWC days and is right square in the middle of the one of the most football-talented states in the nation. Morriss is underrated a bit, but what Dan has built in Ames over his tenure is something few could pull off.
I would not put Dan in the top 25 and maybe even not higher than he is ranked, but to rank those guys higher is a bit of an injustice. Having Franchione in the top 50 at all makes this entire article lose any credibility for me, and not having Novak from Northern Illinois even rated is rediculous. Toledo Tom's omission in favor of low-level BCS school coaches is noticeable as well. June Jones at 39??? What's he ever done? Les Miles at #22??? Talk to me when he is coaching his players.

Credits: 228,739 | ranking a coach..I'd have to say the biggest things are where has he/she brought them and where is the coach going to take them. In Ferentz favor is his big games and big plays. Also Ferentz is thought of brining the glory back to Iowa. Mac just needs a breakout year that we got close to with Seneca. This could be his year.

Credits: 295,569 NFL: Bengals NBA: Jazz MLB: Royals | McCarney is great for Iowa State, and I hope he stays until he retires, but he is not and probably will never be a very good gameday coach. I see his teams as being disciplined and well-prepared, but he is WAY too conservative and stubborn about some things. This weakness in his coaching arsenal has probably prevented his teams from playing in two Big 12 Championship games.

Agreed. I liken Dan McCarney to Wayne Morgan. Probably the greatest recruiter possible for Iowa State. Great with Boosters. Horrible with coaching on Game Days. He has done a lot for the program by taking ISU to bowl games on a consitent basis but we will never "get over the hump" with Dan. 3rd and 15 draw plays & Qb sneaks isn't going to get you there. He would make a fantastic AD somewhere. |

I agree with your analysis . . . bad game day coach. good at getting the best possible talent to iowa state and turning them into football players. as iowa state builds a longer track record of success, the talent should continue to increase because of his sales/recruiting skills. still, i would dump him for Steve Loney in a second.
Question for people reading this thread . . . if McCarney were really the 46th best coach in the country (you could somehow prove this), would that be good enough for you?
I don't think it would be good enough for me, but I also don't know if it's true . . . I also think Jamie Pollard will help Dan to improve his abilities by challenging him to be more successful.

I would never give back the Seneca "come-from-behind" win IN IOWA CITY. That win prevented Iowa from going to the National Title game. That games rates among my top greatest games in ISU history. |

That was a great year. We came back and kicked their backside in the second half, then they have a good season, then they play another Cardinal and Gold team and get flashbacks and get the *** kicked in front of national TV. Of course you have to take into consideration how bad the refs screwed up the calls costing them both games I am sure.....
