May as well get this discussion started now as with how many expect our season to go - it will likely come up sometime during the fall.
So, at what point do you go to Arnaud or Bates (if Bates not redshirted)? Or do you at all?
Lets say we're 2-7 - regardless of QB play - do you go to the younger guy to get him ready for '08?
Or if Bret is having troubles - offensive line struggles or not - does he move to #2 in the depth charts?
This thread in no way depicts my thoughts as to if we should make a move or not and I'm well aware that Chizik is more educated to make that choice than any fan - just wanted to start a discussion as to what the members here would like to see happen.
Should be an interesting debate.

I would jump off the Chizik bandwagon in a hurry if he benched Brett simply to give experience to one of the younger guys. It would be unfair to Brett and I'd never support a coach who would do that.
Now if Arnaud or Bates beats him out, then that is a different story.

No way will Bret Meyer get benched. I wouldn't mind seeing who ever ends up being the #2 QB get worked in for a series a game or something like Mizzou did with Brad Smith and Chase Daniels, but otherwise Bret is the man. Even if for some reason ISU was 2-8 with two games left I still start Meyer out of class.

I think you open the position up for competition and let Meyer earn it out of training camp. That may be the only way to push him is to let those other guys have a legit shot at the starting spot. I think Bret kind of hit his peak somewhere in his Sophomore and Junior years. Gotta break that bad habit of locking onto a receiver...

I would agree he tends to do that too much, but lots of QB's do. He didn't have the greatest season last year but how much can we expect from him when he loses Blythe and Davis for multiple games, Hicks in and out of the lineup and no RB play from the backups on regular basis, and horrid offensive line. I'd like to see Bret step up into the pocket a little more but thats minor.
He took lots of beatings last year and kept getting up for more, he's a tough kid.

One thing that did frustrate me about Meyer last season was that, on the few occasions he did have protection, he often left the pocket too early and had to make a wild throw on the run. Part of this can probably be attributed to the fact that his line was rarely blocking well and he never felt secure in the pocket. Regardless, he certainly does need to get better at checking down receivers and standing tall in the pocket. Let's hope we can produce an offensive line that can give him the time.

Here's my opinion:
- Let Bret play the key games (Iowa, UNI, Texas, Oklahoma)
- Let Arnaud play also
I do not want to see another season go by and our quarterback not making the obvious plays. Bret Meyer of 06 is the Drew Tate of 06 in terms of making careless plays. One may say we didn't have a good O-line last year, I agree to some extent. But during the Kansas game, Bret Meyer made way too many bad decisions for me to support him any more.
I say Chizik needs to play both QB in the best of their abilities just like the Florida gators did.

I think we are going to see a lot of improvement out of Brett Meyer this year...
I think a lot of players are going to play harder...they are going to have to.

Open up competition for the position, if Meyer gets beaten out, then sit him down. I think that holds for the entire season. I trust that Chizik will put the players on the field that give us the best chance to win, that is his job after all. Whether that is Meyer or one of the back-ups, that is for him to evaluate on a continuing basis. I would support whatever decision he makes whenever he makes is regarding this. Thats what he makes the big bucks for.

I'll support whoever we go with but I think it's fair game with a new system going into place to open it up for competition and give the job to who earns it. If Arnaud can come into practices and out-play Meyer I don't care that Meyer is a senior, you go with the guy who is the best fit. Meyer has had 3 years to audition for this job and you pretty much know what you are going to get with him by now. A little competition brings out the best in players too which is something last year's team lacked. Especially on the offensive line where the backups weren't performing well enough to push the starters for their jobs.
I would hope Bret can come out and show he deserves to remain the starting QB but I'm not much for giving a guy a job just because he has put his time in.
