Re: 4-5 wideouts for ISU under Chizik...

It was really hard to figure out last season with the O line. I tend not to blame them as much as the play calling. Stephenson was all big 12 at center and has a real shot in the pros, the two twins only played together the last game because of injuries to others, and they looked great. Something was screwed up, I don't believe it was the players. Same goes for Meyer, how do you go from all Big 12 and one of the top picked QB's in the country to the kind of year he had. Again, you can blame our guys or blame the coaching. I believe it's the latter. We may have better talent than we think with some decent coaching. (this is not a mac-attack)

4-5 Wideouts - That's Not what GC has said in Interviews

I could see 4-5 WR's in certain situations- like 3rd & 20. However, every interview I've heard GC- he mentioned the importance of the run game & a balanced attack. Based on those interviews I'd be surprised if ISU goes to a TT type of attack unless it's out of desperation.

The Huskers struggled under Callahan until he figured out he needed a running game.

I hope the new staff upgrades our offense by incorporating more motion, passing to backs/TE's, diversity in routes, more deep throws & a breakaway threat at RB. I'm not sure we need an offense that throws the ball 50+ times a game.

Agreed. GC has talked a lot about the importance of a good running game. I really think our lack of a good running game is what hurt us the most the past 4 years.

I like the idea of the spread offense as one of the tools in our tool box. If we can't run the ball well, it is a good way to take some pressure off our running back with some of those quick short throws.

Gene's a defensive man by trade(just like Coach Mac was.). It will be interesting to see how creative he get's with the offense.

Re: 4-5 wideouts for ISU under Chizik...

(Quote) This is exactly the point needed to be made if Chizik wants the wide open...the O-line has to play out of its mind to be able to run the wide open O like we tried last year, bcuz obvs. it didn't work to well last year, bret was running for his life way too often. honestly its boring but i'd like to see us get back to the run setting up the pass, get back to what used to be our bread and butter at State, you all remember a guy named Troy Davis, and Darren Davis? Now that Stevie Hicks is gone, I didn't hate hicks, but i didn't love him either, it just seemed like he was always running thru 3 feet of snow...I think we need the ground to set up the pass.

I agree, all those close heartbreaking losses to Nebraska with Troy Davis as our featured (read ONLY) back. Man we were so competitive in those, and about every other one as well during that time, we could keep giving Troy the ball in the fourth quarter....

And yes, Hicks was slow, even his 1000 yard year he looked like he was running on sand, uphill, into the wind, in 99% humidity, while carrying a big screen television.

You're pretty tough on Stevie...he is a super guy who gave his all. Injuries just did him in. Maybe he can climb out and have a pro career.

isucy86, great post. I agree ISU does not need to throw 50 times. I think there were several times the last couple of seasons where ISU could have went to 3 step drops and did not. Diversity in routes is HUGE! I felt that most of ISU's routes, both long and short, were along the sideline where Meyer had to have almost a perfect pass. There was really no margin for error and was VERY conservative in nature. I think the type of passing game we are both thinking of will help open up the ground game Chizik is talking about.

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

I would be very surpised and disappointed if we ran a 4-5 wr offense. I am really looking forward to watching a reliable running game.

Let's stick to 3 and 13 option left....we get usually 1-2 yards which sets up for a challanging punt...

Don't knock punting...it was our best offensive play vs. Texas Tech last season.

Re: 4-5 wideouts for ISU under Chizik...

haha... the third down play calling has always reminded me of HS football my freshman year...

COACH: "Punt team!"
PLAYER: "Coach, it's only third down"
COACH: "Oh, ok. Right 12, punt team get ready"

I could easily see Barney doing the same thing.

My senior year we punted on 3rd down.

Some People see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say why not? When I took this job I said why not Iowa State? Why not winning? Why not bowl games? Why not sell outs? Why not national respect? Why not us? Why not here? Why not the cyclone family?
