One ISU recruit was quoted as being told by Coach Chizik that he plans to run a wide open offense with 4 and 5 wideout sets. A tough in your face defense with a wide open offense sounds like fun football to me. Quickest fix for an undermanned offensive line is to pass the ball a lot. I thought we should have opened it up the past two years with what we had, but no go. The new face of Iowa State Football....wide open. Will it work?

i would hope so, with the talent we have at the wideout positions and the talent at QB it SHOULD work, but it should have worked last year too so...

Are we still going to run the draw on third and long? That play worked all the time.

Sadly, we can't run one of our best plays from '04 this season.
Flynn on the keeper. Golly I've missed that.
Whatever offense that puts up W's is fine with me though. I don't care if it's 100% run and we don't throw a single pass or vice versa. Just win baby.

Gonna be fun to watch that sorta offense in november with a 30mph wind. In the short run, it might work, but in the long run, with the weather we have, we need to be able to pound the ball. But a run and gun offense sounds fun to watch.

depends on what routes the receivers are running. Brett didn't have time with the routes we ran last year as the receivers didn't get immediate separation.
I would really like to see Blythe used in motion to catch the defense by surprise a few times, as they can't lock in on him easily.

had we run a wideopen offense last year it might have worked, the problem was we lined up as one, but than moved are wideouts in for runs to give away what we were doing. If we can develop better blocking schemes and improve Meyer's ability to throw off of a three step drop, than the offense is made, and the defense is to worry about. We have a plethera of talent at wideout, we have Blythe and Hamilton, who are big guys who can go up and get the ball. Moses who will fill what Davis can do, and than Messiah who will run short routes and be a very good screen guy, I think, we need to learn how to run screens and should be able to in 4 or 5 wideout sets, if we can teach receivers to block. Another thing we might see is Barkema lined up as a receiver in some instances, which would add a wrinkle, do some underneath routes with him coming under a post route for Blythe. I think with our personal right now, this offense sounds perfect, now we only have to figure out who the hell can block and who the hell can run.

I'll never forget my freshman year ('01) and at my first game my upperclass friends would properly predict the 'draw'. That never changed.
And apologies to the board if this topic has been beaten to death in the past, which I suspect it has, but still fairly new to CF.

Sarcasm Hey what could be a better play call than a QB draw on 3rd and 21???? Didn't you hear the comparisons between Meyer and Vick????? Hopefully Chizik can see why it was usually 2-and-out for us last year. Third down was just to get the defense a little more rest.

So if we did go 4-5 wide...list your personnel at WR...
Blythe
Sumral
Hamilton
Moses
Messiah
Jones could see some minutes too.
I think Hamilton has the body and potential to be the #2 guy and be similar to Jon Davis - yet better. I expected to see some of that last year and didn't - leaving me disappointed. I'm hoping the new staff will find a way to get production out of him. At 6'3", 217 pounds and certainly not slow - this is a kid we really should want to get the ball to.

I don't know if we need to go that wide, but we need to get some receivers out there and run some three step drops for Meyer. I was dying for them to do that last year when he would do a five step drop and there would pretty much be a guy right on top of him.

Bret did convert that 3rd and 21 at A&M in 2005. That was damn near the only time it actually worked. Probably the worst thing that could have happened though, as we saw that play time and time again after that.
