Capital City recap 06/21

Please note that I got to the 1st game about 5 minutes into it. From that point, this is what I saw:

Gratias Construction:
Jiri Hubalek had 16 points that I saw. He seemed to have a scowl on his face a lot and was down on his team. To me it looked like he wanted to be shooting the ball even more that he did. He got discouraged when younger kids would take a shot and miss. I recall times last year that he complained about calls and he did this tonight about fouls he was called for as well. He hit a couple of 3's. His game didn't seem much different from last year. I didn't notice that he was in any better shape. On a side note and not that it is too big a deal, but I did see him slamming down some Mickey D's after his game. I guess what's a guy supposed to do in the summer for a quick meal?

Wesley Johnson had some impressive moments for the first I saw him. He had 19 points that I saw. He shot the ball pretty well and I saw him hit 1 three. He took it to the hoop quite a bit and seemed to handle the ball pretty well. He played D pretty well most of the time.

On a side note, there was a kid from Lawton Christian?, named Josh Young that had a great 3 point shot. Not sure where that is, but that kid could shoot in warm ups. He is a bit small and looked to be a nice young guard.

Peak Performance:
Jesson Gray played better than the first time I saw him. He had 23 points that I saw. He had three 3's so he seemed to shoot that shot better. He took quite a few shots.

Ross Marsden was not there.

MOHA:
Alex Thompson had 8 points and seemed to reflect what I remember seeing from Iowa. He shuffled his feet on a few occasions which is something I remember about him. He hit the boards pretty hard and played pretty good defense.

Mike Taylor impressed me a lot. He scored 25 points. He had 4 threes with a good looking shot. He wasn't afraid to penetrate and go to the hoop. Some very nice scoop shots under the basket and in traffic. He hit the free throw line a few times by drawing fowls. He played pretty good defense most of the time. I liked his game quite a bit for the first time seeing him.

Chris Caesar had 4 points. Didn't play or shoot a ton.

Ev Cochrane:
Rahshon Clark played pretty well in scoring 21 points. He missed all his 3 pointers that I saw. He had a few thunderous dunks and plays above the rim. He went for a double pump reverse dunk on a break and Mike Taylor hustled to disrupt it. They met up again at one point were Rahshon got a rebound and was going to throw one down again. The result was a foul by Taylor, but you had to like his hustle to not give an easy dunk. He had some very nice blocks.

Brock Jacobsen didn't play a ton again, but he did get to put more 3's up this game. He hit 4 for 12 points, but missed at least 4 or 5 in the process. He doesn't do anything to flashy, but seems to play hard.

I didn't see enough of the last game to form too many opinions or get many stats.

I too was at all three games and to avoid sounding redundant to the great stat man cybernate, I will just add a couple additional opinions.

On Hubalek, I agree he was scouling a lot and appeared to be frustrated with a lot of things going on. I think he was 2 for 10 on his three pointers and if he is going to be our post man, had better start learning to post up against someone. He spent a lot of time setting picks on top and then hanging out at the three point line. If we are dependent on him to be our big man, we are in for some problems. I am hoping he proves me wrong and I'll give him the whole Capital City league season to prove me wrong

Dodie Dunson started out a little slow in the third game but got hot from the three point stripe and hit at least 11 in a span of 15 minutes game time. He also had quite a few 2 pts and I would imagine he had over 40 pts and his team had an easy time of it against Coca Cola.

Cory Mcintosh was not as impressive as Sunday night but he got into foul trouble early and so was not as effective. I had posted some comments about him using his mouth a little too much and I think I made the wrong assumption. Watching a little closer, he is a team leader and motivator and I think most of the talk had to do with his leadership ability. I do think that Ryan Sears(Creighton) had him quite frustrated and vice versa Sunday night as they match up very well. Dodie got hot shooting three's before halftime and Cory joked around to Dodie that "he had more points than Cory had minutes of playing time". The comradery of the Cyclone players was very evident.

Both Korey Johnson and Wesley Johnson had impressive playing time. Korey plays aggressive and really hustles. Wesley is a really impressive ball handler and had a couple of thunder dunks too. I feel real good about our guard play that is for sure.

Alex Thompson really played the post well. I wish he did not have to sit out a year because I think after watching him tonight, he could handle Hubalek in the paint quite easily. Maybe Hubalek was playing around tonight in different positions, but I just did not see him being the post player we are going to need come November....

Another player that was impressive I thought was Sean Haluska. I think he is going to be better than his bird flu brother before he is done. I would like to see him in Cardinal and Gold.

I can't wait till Sunday....................

I only saw the first half of the first game tonight. Jessan, Jiri and Wesley showed up together late, with about 14:00 left in the first 20:00 half. They all got into the game pretty quickly after showing up. None of them shot well percentage wise in the first half (without warming up), but Jessan was impressive with his rebounding at both ends of the floor. Got some garbage points on follow ups and also hit a 3 as did Jiri. Wesley's shot wasn't falling too well in the first half, taking a lot of mid-range shots off the dribble.

Next games should be Sunday night at 4:30, 5:45 and 7:00pm at Valley Southwoods 9th Grade School in West Des Moines. No charge to attend, only requirement is that you post whatever you see on this board.

How does his shot look? Someone else on the board wrote about it looking awkward. Does it appear he's been well-coached? I know he has athletic ability out the wazoo, how's his game look overall?

I sat with CyclonesRule91 so I have a lot of the same opinions as he did and just will expand briefly. Dodie first of all was on fire and I could not believe all the threes he was dropping off of screens. I also have a changed opinion on Cory McIntosh. He was cocky at times last week and did get into it with Sears, but this week talked as much but was telling teammates what he wanted them to do and could be a great leader. He even talked on the way off the floor with Cory Johnson and continued for some time telling him what he wanted him to do. Jiri just plain made me mad. I was a big man in high school and know all the don'ts that you never do as a big man. Jiri does them all. He puts the ball down when he gets it and lets people slap at it and he spends 90% of his time beyond the arc looking for the ball so that he can dribble all the way to the hoop or shoot another three. He did not shoot well at all and he did pout about everything as previously mentioned. I hope he realizes we need him to contend for the 5 spot and not to take Will or Curtis's spot up top.
Wesley Johnson is an athlete. He jumps quick and very high just like Rashon. There were times I thought he was going to hit his head on the rim and he put down some monster dunks. I was very impressed with our guard play, but fear that if someone doesn't show some toughness in the paint we will really struggle.

I didn't think his shot looked awkward at all. The guy just flat out hussles all the time. Great ball handler and is not afraid to drive it right down a congested lane (successfully too I might add), and he can play defense with the best of them too. As far as being well coached, it is kind of hard to measure that when this can be more of a free for all league with players coming from all different forms of coaching, but I would say I didn't see anything showing him being out of control. He plays 125% every second he's on the floor and is not afraid to go up against anybody.... IMO.

Speaking of Coaching..........Does anyone know who the coaches are and how they got to be coach? Are they the team sponsors wannabee coach or are they area HS coaches? I know the college coaches can't be there but some of the coaches seem to good for the job and some are just sitting at the end of the bench. I would think coaching these players, if you are not used to the college environment, would be nothing more than trying to retain controlled Chaos......................

I know last year one of the coaches was from East, don't remeber if he was head coach or freshman coach.

I wanted Jiri to die during our last game last season. OK, that's a bit of hyperbole, but his constant ill-timed 3 point shots during that game put a bow on the season for me.

Love him or hate him, Greg Brunner cut out eating that crap before his senior year, and it paid off for him.

These frontline players all need about 30 lbs of muscle

I saw Brunner at the Coral Ridge Mall a couple weeks back, and he is definitely a well built man. Too bad he's about 3 inches too short to make it at the next level...

I've seen him twice at the Capital City League and so far he hasn't done anything worth talking about.
