ISU Football Schedule - Non-conference games

Iowa State’s future nonconference football schedules include games at Las Vegas in 2008, and 2011 trips to Connecticut and Utah, according to schedules released Thursday.

The Cyclones’ nonconference schedules through 2011 also include games against NCAA I-AA opponents. Victories against those teams count among the six required by the NCAA to participate in a bowl game.

Included in the I-AA teams are games against Northern Iowa this season, in 2007, 2010 and 2011.

The following is a list of Iowa State’s nonconference schedule through
2011:

2006 — Aug. 31 vs. Toledo, Sept. 9 vs. UNLV, Sept. 16 at Iowa, Sept. 30 vs. Northern Iowa.

2007 — Sept. 1 vs. Kent State, Sept. 8 vs. Northern Iowa, Sept. 15 vs. Iowa, Sept. 22 at Toledo.

2008 — Aug. 30 vs. South Dakota State (I-AA), Sept. 6 vs. Kent State, Sept. 13 at Iowa, Sept. 20 at Nevada-Las Vegas.

2009 — Sept. 5 vs. North Dakota State (I-AA), Sept. 12 vs. Iowa, Sept. 19 at Kent State, Sept. 26 vs. Army.

2010 — Sept. 4 vs. Northern Illinois, Sept. 11 at Iowa, Sept. 18 vs. Utah, Sept. 25 vs. Northern Iowa.

2011 — Sept. 3 at Utah, Sept. 10 vs. Iowa, Sept. 17 at Connecticut, Sept. 24 vs. Northern Iowa.

Note: Iowa State hosts Tulsa in 2012 and plays at Tulsa in 2013. The Cyclones play at Air Force in 2013 a host Air Force in 2014.

Fun to see Utah on there, I wonder if they will be any good in 2010-11?
It is so tough to schedule quality non-conference opponents so far in advance. Who knows where any particular football program will be 5 years down the road.

I find that non-conference schedule disappointing. I feel we should schedule teams from BCS conferences, not the MAC and WAC. Even if we lose, it will draw more fans scheduling a home-and-home with an SEC team like Arkansas, versus a MAC team like Tulsa. JP keeps promising changes for the future, and obviously this needs to be addressed.

We play Iowa every year, and yes, they are a tough opponent. We then follow it up with some D-1AA school like UNI, and 2 lower tier D-1 schools. Playing a tougher schedule helps the team gain momentum towards the season, and helps immensely in the polls. Just ask Notre Dame.

I think it is obvious that this schedule caters to simply gaining bowl eligibilty.

Can someone explain road games against UNLV, KENT STATE!, and Connecticut?

Utah and Connecticut are expected to be marquee programs in their conferences by that time. Playing the marquee mid-majors on their field is easier to pitch for TV. If you notice, the ESPN Thursday night games prior to conference seasons kicking off usually feature a BCS school going into a mid-major stadium. Had the ISU-Army game been in Jack Trice, that game does not get TV coverage because ISU does not have a contract with ESPN and Fox is not all that interested in promoting the academies, being a west coast entity.

Also...

Should we play schedules like Nebraska - and not play a road game until week 5? Then when they hit a road game, it's a big shock.

Nah, mix these in early - it's a good thing for the team.

I would like see us drop the D-1AA teams. It just discredits your season and IF we are going to play a D-1AA team then it needs to be UNI and UNI only. I am not thrilled to see us play North and South Dakota State. Play Iowa, Two D-1A teams in mid-major conference and then play one team from an BCS conference. It can even be really weak BCS teams like Mississippi State or something. I love the 2011 schedule. They all need to be like that.

I would really like to see ISU play these mid-major teams in an NFL stadium or another neutral sight. Schedule a mid-major team from Texas (SMU, North Texas, TCU) and play them in at a neutal sight in Texas. This could be a huge recruiting bost, especially with how we focus recruiting on Texas.
