Re: Reggie Bush and USC are screwed

They're USC. Nothing will happen despite the fact this isn't the first player from those teams that was on the take.

As much as i don't like USC, this is bs if they go on probation for it...i really didn't like what they did to michigan for what happened in basketball with the "fab five." I don't think future classes should suffer for what happened b4 they were there.
If you don't punish the school, then there would be plenty of unspoken deals with boosters. What would stop a booster who was willing to pay a player and willing to take the risk. If the school is responsible for that, they at least can keep track of their boosters, educate them and attempt to keep them in line.

Something tells me that it's USC and not much will end up happening to them. But if this happened at ISU, the reprimands would be much more harsh.

But oh well, everybody would still know they were the best team with the best player by far (except the year they lost to Texas).
I don't remember the exact ramifications, but there was a similar story at Notre Dame while Lou Holtz was the coach in the 1990's. It came to light when a woman was caught embezzeling from her employer and she told the court she used the ill-gotten funds to entertain Notre Dame football players. The primary beneficiary of her entertainment was WR Derrick Mayes, a future Packer draft pick. Holtz claimed no knowledge, but I think the NCAA hammered him anyway stating, that he should have had knowledge of a player taking weekend trips to Vegas, etc. I'm not certain of the final outcome and too lazy to look into it, but there is NCAA precedent for such situations...

OK - I did look it up on the NCAA major infractions database and here's the summary:

    Institution: University of Notre Dame
    Date: 17-DEC-99

    Facts Summary: Extra Benefits:

Violation Summary: Extra Benefits provided to football student-athletes in the form of gifts and trips by a representative of the instituion's athletics interests; an university employee provided extra benefits to student-athletes; a student-athlete paid a university employee to prepare an academic paper.

Penalty Summary: Public reprimand and censure; two years of probation; financial aid awards in football reduced by one during each academic year of 2000-01 and 2001-02; annual reports regarding compliance.

Past history shows ignorance of gifts is not defense for a university. It has happened over and over again and the University is screwed. In this case, they can't change the rules for USC..they will be delt with severely. If they did not take this approach, any rich booster could give money and the school involved would say they simply did not know. Without the sanctions, there is nothing to stop the free flow of gifts and dollars.

Put the school on probation. They have cheated and deserve to get into trouble. I'll bet he is not the only one doing it, this would help put a stop to it.

Take away the Heisman and give it to Vince. Okay I agree with this.

Put USC on probation. They should and might just lose some schollys which will make no difference. Say they lose 2 per year for 2 years. This will in no way effect that program. They have so much talent and depth that it will hardly cause a wrinkle in the program. Schlereath said it best this morning on Mike & Mike. "Go to the USC campus, they will have no trouble recruiting the top players with or without probation." That said the only thing the NCAA can do to stop this is to prohibit post season play by USC and we all know that this is not going to happen.

The NCAA really needs to address the issue of paying college athletes. Until they allow the athletes to reclaim some portion of the money that a school makes off of them this is going to continue to happen when a poor kid moves away from home and is approached by some rich guy with a great plan for making some quick cash.

While I'd love for VY to get the Heisman, I doubt he wants to get it this way - if it comes to that.

You're exactly right IMO. We all know how the NCAA is. They never touch their gravy-trains. Oklahoma, USC, etc all get away with murder. Remember that Adrian Peterson thing in the pre-season with his dad supposedly working at some car dealership? Was that ever proven? If so, why did nothing come of it?
