The key to better utilization of the TE is going to be development of better pass blocking and schemes to protect the QB. McFarland has a challenge to deal with as there have been 4 straight years of giving up between 3 and 4 sacks per game - not to mention countless hurries and throw aways. The previous solution was to often keep the TE & RB in to help block due to the tackles struggling with rush ends. This resulted in fewer guys to cover which allowed the defense to send more backers so the situation actually turned out worse.
It's nice to have the TE help open up the field, but I really don't care as long as the offense clicks. The key to improvement is developing O linemen who can block one-on-one and having plays that burn the defense when they overuse the blitz.
