Cyclones on Gameday

They are doing a story about the "Fab Five" on gameday right now and showed a few highlights of the Clones playing against them.

2004-05 must've been something else, then. Didn't we beat a ranked Texas team on the road, as well as beating Kansas that year?

Deep within the heart of Iowa, a storm is brewing...
... the winds of change ripple throughout the vast fields of corn surrounding the small college town of Ames.

The Gene Chizik era of football continues, and, with it, a renewed attitude of pride, determination, and success.

This is Cyclone Football.

They've got to almost all have come from '98 on cause I think we beat Kansas at the Phog 3 years straight and I'm sure they were ranked every time. Plus the 2 years we won conference titles we only lost 5 games combined and 1 was at Colorado and 1 at Mizzou. I know during Orr's tenure we were always tough as heck at home but rarely got a conference road win, especially against the really good teams. That's a crazy stat though.

“I’m just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard,” Eustachy joked. “If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, he’ll be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.”

Re: Cyclones on Gameday

I think the last time we won at KU was the year after we won at Texas but I might be wrong.
EDIT: I was wrong. Both in February of '05. #20 Texas and #2 KU both in OT.

Wow, Captain Morgan owns 2 of the 7 all-time road wins over ranked teams? Interesting. Too bad we couldn't beat the crappy teams too.

Two others must have been at KU in 2000 and 2001. Is that kind of sad that I can name over half off the top of my head and they're all within the last 7 years?

Re: Cyclones on Gameday

I would guess at least a couple of those road wins came in 99-2000 season when our only conference loss was to Oklahoma on the road, whom was rated. I know we beat Kansas there and I am guessing that a few other road wins were against Big 12 top 25 opponents (Mizzou, OK State, etc). Pretty sad road record against rated opponents.

Yeah, Morgan's teams weren't bad when he had Jared Homan as a leftover from Eustachy.

Re: Cyclones on Gameday

Kind of adds an interesting dynamic to the talk of the old Hilton Magic of the 80's. Just looking quickly, I couldn't find a year where a JO coached team won more than 2 conference road games (out of 7 in a Big 8 schedule). And several times they never lost at Hilton the whole season. So as much as that proves it was a great home-court advantage, I think part of the reason it is remembered so fondly is we often struggled badly on the road. His two best conference records were 9-5 (H: 7-0, A: 2-5) in 85-86 and 8-6 (H: 7-0, A: 1-6) in 92-93.

Also, I'm sometimes amazed how little credit WM got for the amazing 7 game run he put together beating 3 ranked teams. Unfortunately, there just weren't enough other games like those seven.
